Klobuchar Statement on Minnesota Exports Reaching Record Levels

2011 exports increase by over 7 percent from 2010; highest annual total on record; Klobuchar chairs Senate subcommittee on export promotion and has passed legislation into law to boost exports and increase America’s competitiveness in the global economy

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar today released the following statement after the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) released new data showing Minnesota’s exports totaled $20.3 billion in 2011 – a 7.3 percent increase over 2010 export levels and the highest annual total on record. Klobuchar chairs the U.S. Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Competitiveness, Innovation, and Export Promotion and has passed legislation into law to boost exports and increase America’s competitiveness in the global economy.

“On my Made in America tour, I’ve seen firsthand how Minnesota businesses are selling their products to customers around the world and lifting up their local communities as a result,” Klobuchar said.“This report shows strong progress for our state, and I will continue to work to open new markets for U.S. exports and make sure that American businesses can compete in the global marketplace.”

Klobuchar has been a leader in the effort to boost exports in Minnesota and across the country. Klobuchar introduced the bipartisan Export Promotion Act to provide small- and medium-sized businesses with the tools they need to tap into markets overseas. The bill was incorporated into the Small Business Jobs Act that was passed into law. She has also introduced the bipartisan Innovate America Act to promote innovation and increase America’s ability to compete in the global economy.
