Georgia Weatherization Assistance Program
Program Description
Weatherization is a term which means "to make your home more energy efficient." In Georgia, the purpose of this program is to make necessary energy-related repairs free of charge to income-eligible households. The first step in this process is for you to call or write the Community Action Agency or another non-profit organization listed below that serves your community. They will be able to quickly decide if you are eligible. If you qualify, a skilled technician will visit your home to assess it for heat loss. They will look at all heat loss problems to decide what energy repairs are needed, such as caulking, fixing broken windowpanes, and weatherstripping. Next, the attic will be checked to see if additional insulation is needed. Your home will be checked to see if any other energy savings are required to help reduce your energy use. However, there may be a short waiting period for this service. Just by installing some of these simple energy savings measures, household energy can be reduced substantially.Priority is given to the elderly and handicapped, especially those that own or are buying their homes. Services to these groups will be handled as quickly as possible. Rental property can be weatherized with a signed agreement from the landlord.
