    Much the same as other American families, the Turnbulls look forward to the holiday season. Andrew and Sunee Turnbull have been married 10 years and have three sons. This Army family should all be together for Christmas. Last year at this time, however, things were a bit less settled for the Turnbulls. Andrew, 31, had recently returned home from his second deployment to Iraq with extensive injuries suffered when a hand grenade blew up inside his Stryker vehicle. Along with physical wounds, he had post-traumatic stress disorder. His family is a key element in his ongoing recovery.

    Camellia Jefferson, garrison school liaison officer, said she has seen an increase in military Families opting to homeschool their children during her nine-year tenure working as a school liaison officer. Her observations match the latest studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Education that home schooled children has increased between 1999 and 2003 from approximately 850,000 to 1.1 million. In the Fort Gillem and Fort McPherson communities, Jefferson said there are close to 60 students, ages 5 through 17, being home-schooled. Parents continue enrolling their children each week, she added.

The holiday party, set for 1 to 4 p.m., will feature several activities, including face painting, magic shows, holiday crafts, a moon bounce and giant slides, a model train display, story time with Mrs. Claus, and lots of fun clowns and life-size characters, including Frosty the Snowman, Minnie Mouse and a Holiday Bear. The centerpiece of the event is the visit each child has with Santa Claus and the gift of the cute and cuddly stuffed bear, whose neck is adorned with a military scarf.

More than 30 spouses of Soldiers at the Warrior Transition Brigade at Fort Hood learned about the programs available to their Warriors during the Warrior Transition Brigades Spouses Orientation Nov. 20. The busy spouses asked Thompson to create a "Virtual Family Readiness Group." Thompson assigned the task that day and is looking to launching the virtual FRG in early December.

    The USACRC has updated its Family Engagement Kit developed to encourage Family Members to take an active role in their SoldierAca,!a,,cs off-duty safety, particularly those returning from a deployment. Research has shown that some Soldiers take deployment and the return home in stride, without missing a beat, for others it not a seamless reintegration. Some individuals have a more difficult time trying to re-connect with their past life or to integrate and modify their deployment behavior into their present situation. Regardless of whether Soldiers are readying for a deployment, returning from a deployment or neither, Family Members are a front line of defense and can positively affect Soldiers behavior. This kit has simple, yet effective, Aca,!A"how toAca,!A? instructions combined with other useful aids to help Family Members take care of all our Soldiers.
