Hearing to Examine Federal Maritime Domain Awareness Programs

July 9, 2012

Washington, DC – The Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, chaired by U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ), will meet tomorrow to review the implementation of programs by the Coast Guard to collect, analyze, and disseminate information used to assess and respond to safety and security threats in the maritime domain.

Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) is the federal government’s effort to achieve an understanding of activities in the global maritime environment that can affect the security, safety, economy, or environment of the United States. The Coast Guard is in the process of acquiring new technology and implementing new programs in that effort.

The Coast Guard has spent over ten years and $684 million on new communications equipment as part of larger recapitalization program. On Tuesday, the Subcommittee will review the Coast Guard’s strategy and the resources being used to combine data streams into a common operating picture to achieve efficient and timely MDA.
