Support to the Global War on Terror

The Armenian Government is fully committed to the war on terror. One of the main objectives of national foreign policy is support of international peace and stability, as well as an input to the international efforts of fight against terrorism. Participating in international conventions against terrorism, Armenia thoroughly implements their provisions. Armenia provides political and operational support to the international anti-terrorist coalition, and condemns terrorism in all its forms. In 2004 Armenia joined the following anti-terrorist conventions: Convention on the Prohibition and prevention of terrorism, International Convention on Suppression of terrorist bombing, International Convention for the financing of terrorism. The Government of the Republic of Armenia adopted a number of legislative acts in support of implementing it’s obligations in this area.

Operations of the 12th peacekeeping brigades of the MoD of RA


  • Kosovo (2004-2011): in each rotation, approximately 35 servicemen
    • Tasks conducted by contingent: patrolling, security of military and civilian objects in the area of responsibility of the Greek peacekeeping battalion
  • Iraq (2005-2008): in each rotation, approximately 45 servicemen, including drivers, de-miners and doctors
    • Tasks: humanitarian support, de-mining, medical support to the local population in the area of responsibility (Center-South) of Polish division
  • Afghanistan: (from 2010) in each rotation, approximately 120 servicemen
    • Tasks: Both regions are stationed in the area of responsibility of GFR peacekeeping forces (RC 'North')
    • Kunduz: airport, airfield and base security, patrolling.
    • Mazari-e-Sharif: airport, airfield and base security, patrolling
    • Talokan: OMLT group

 Further Plans

 Armenia is determined to strengthen its capabilities to combat terrorism and intends to enhance it’s capabilities to manage the consequences caused by terrorist acts. According to the NATO-Armenia Partnership Action Plan, Armenia plans to enhance existing peacekeeping capabilities to be fully interoperable with NATO and Allied forces.
