Encouraging Local Students to Consider Our Nation’s Service Academies

Wednesday evening, I hosted Service Academy Night at the University of Notre Dame’s Eck Visitors Center. Students interested in attending one of our nation’s service academies were able to speak to representatives from the academies about student life and the admissions process. Students who are interested in pursuing a career as an officer in the Armed Forces through the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) also had the opportunity to meet with representatives of each branch of the ROTC.

Welcoming students, their families, and representatives from our nation’s service academies to my office’s Service Academy Night.

I was pleased that so many students from our area were interested in learning about our nation’s service academies. I am proud to nominate students from north central Indiana to attend the service academies because the United States service academies provide young men and women with a top-quality college education while preparing them for successful careers as officers in the military. This January, I nominated 22 area students for admission to the United States service academies for the class of 2016. We are extraordinarily grateful to the men and women in the Armed Forces, and I would like to thank these young men and women for serving our country bravely.

Starting a New School Year

Across north central Indiana, students are back in the classroom for another year of learning. Our local schools have started the new academic year with good news. I was pleased to learn that Indiana University-South Bend increased their fall enrollment by 1.25% from last fall. In Plymouth, more than 100 students started their high school education at the newly established School of Inquiry. I am proud of all our local schools and students for their hard work and dedication to learning.

As a former school board president, I understand the importance of making a quality education available to all children. The lessons that are learned in classrooms across Indiana and our country provide our children with the foundation they need to have a successful future. From voting to keep interest rates low on federal student loans to hosting information sessions for students applying for college financial aid, ensuring that Hoosier students have access to a quality education is one of my top priorities in Congress.

Sincerely,

Congressman Joe Donnelly
