Rockville, Feb 1, 2011 -

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement in honor of Black History Month:

“Eighty-five years ago Dr. Carter G. Woodson began the tradition of honoring African Americans each February for their sacrifices and achievements, and this year marks the 25th anniversary of Black History Month.  During this month, we reflect on the sacrifices and celebrate the contributions African Americans have made throughout our country’s history and rededicate ourselves to ensuring equal opportunities and justice for all our nation’s citizens.

“As our country continues to recover from this economic downturn, African Americans have faced disproportionate challenges.  President Obama and the Democratic Congress have made strides to address those problems, working to create jobs and provide access to more affordable health care – but there is more to be done.  As we honor their accomplishments, we also continue to fight to create a fairer and more just nation for African Americans and all of our citizens.”
