Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Joe Donnelly supported The Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act, S. 1963, which addresses many of the challenges facing our men and women in uniform, veterans, and their families.  This bipartisan bill passed the House with unanimous support.

“Our brave men and women in uniform deserve the finest health care we can provide when they return from protecting our country,” said Donnelly.  “Some of our wounded warriors will require a lifetime of care for the sacrifice they made on our behalf.  It is more than fitting that we ensure those who help provide that care are well-trained and have the support they need to make certain our veterans are getting the best care possible.  I was proud to support this bill today because it identifies the needs of our veterans, their families, and other caregivers and provides them with the resources they’ve earned.”

The Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act provides many essential services to veterans and their families, including new support such as counseling and respite care for family members and other live-in caregivers who care for disabled, ill, or injured veterans.  The bill also enhances health services for our 1.8 million women veterans, including providing newborn care for the first time.  The legislation additionally expands mental health services for veterans and health care access for veterans in rural areas, and prohibits co-payments on health services for veterans who are catastrophically disabled.

The bill is supported by many veterans’ organizations such as the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, AMVETS, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Wounded Warrior Project, and the National Military Family Association.

The legislation now goes to the Senate for its consideration.
