Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Joe Donnelly announced that five north central Indiana police departments will receive over $4.5 million in total as a result of The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act under the Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), COPS Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP).
“This much-needed funding will enable five of our local police departments to retain or hire law enforcement officials,” Donnelly said. “During these challenging economic times, many police departments have had to reduce the number of law enforcement officials on staff. I am pleased to see that money from The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is helping to strengthen our communities and keep them safe.”
CHRP grants will provide 100 percent funding for approved entry-level salaries and benefits for three years for newly-hired, full-time sworn officer positions (including filling existing unfunded vacancies) or for rehired officers who have been laid off, or are scheduled to be laid off on a future date, as a result of local budget cuts.
The Akron, Kokomo, LaPorte, Michigan City and South Bend Police Departments will all receive funding as a result of the CHRP grants.
