Amtrak Attempts at Competition Cost Taxpayers

Committee to Release Oversight Report and Hold Hearing on Costs of Amtrak’s Monopoly Mentality

September 10, 2012

Washington, DC – Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John L. Mica (R-FL) will lead a Congressional hearing on Tuesday analyzing the costs to taxpayers resulting from Amtrak’s failure to effectively compete with the private sector in operating commuter rail service across the United States.

Mica will also release a Committee investigative report highlighting the significant cost savings realized by commuter rail agencies through competitive contracting for operations, and Amtrak’s ineffectiveness when competing with the private sector on these contracts. The hearing and report will also focus on Amtrak’s efforts to stifle competition from the private sector.

Tuesday’s hearing will include testimony from Amtrak, two commuter rail agencies, and representatives of passenger rail operators and labor. Click here for more information about the hearing.
