Madison Man Sentenced for Illegal Possession of Firearm

Madison, Wis. — John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Travis Talley, 28, Madison, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb to 36 months in prison for possessing a firearm and ammunition after having been previously convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. Talley pleaded guilty to this offense on December 6, 2011.

The investigation of Talley began after his girlfriend, Ashley Wire, 24, also of Madison, purchased a total of three handguns on three separate occasions within five months at MC Sports in Madison. Two of the handguns were .45 caliber and the third was a .40 caliber. On November 3, 2010, Wire picked up the third handgun, but law enforcement agents were able to place a trigger–lock on the handgun before it was delivered.

On November 15, 2011, Wire pleaded guilty to lying on a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives form by falsely stating that she was the true purchaser of a firearm when, in fact, she was purchasing the firearm for Talley. On February 7, 2012, Wire was sentenced by Judge Crabb to 18 months probation.

The charges against Talley and Wire were the result of an investigation conducted by the Madison Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter M. Jarosz.
