Call to Scene of Homicide Led to Gun Charge Conviction, Prison
KANSAS CITY, KAN. — A Kansas City, Kan., man whose roommate was murdered has been sentenced to 46 months on federal firearms charges, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today.
Gary D. Davis, 29, Kansas City, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction. In his plea, Davis admitted he unlawfully possessed a loaded 9 mm Kel–Tec PF–9 pistol with an obliterated serial number.
Police discovered the pistol on Sept. 26, 2010, when they responded to a report of shots fired at 2330 N. 75th Terrace in Kansas City, Kan. At the residence, police found the body of Johnny Sloan, who had been shot and killed.
During the investigation, police found the 9 mm pistol in a drawer in a night stand in a bedroom. Davis told police he had no knowledge of the homicide. He said he was in Topeka the night Sloan was killed. He said he aware that Sloan was involved in distributing marijuana. Police suspected the homicide was drug related.
Tests on the gun identified Davis’ DNA on the grips, slide and trigger of the firearm. Davis was prohibited from possessing a firearm because of previous felony convictions. He was convicted in Wyandotte County District Court in 2008 on a charge of possession of cocaine and in 2009 on a charge of possession with intent to sell cocaine.
Grissom commended the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Assistant U.S. Attorney Terra Morehead for their work on the case.
