Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement following the Senate vote on the DISCLOSE Act:

“I applaud Senator Reid for bringing the DISCLOSE Act to the floor today and Senator Whitehouse for championing this issue. Unfortunately, Senate Republicans stood with special interests to block this legislation.  Instead of shining a light on the deluge of secret money that is flooding our elections, the GOP has chosen to protect secret funders who are trying to elect a Congress that will rig the rules to benefit their agendas, like those who want to protect tax loopholes that reward companies that outsource American jobs.

“Voters have a right to know who is spending money to influence their vote – the DISCLOSE Act would do just that, and we will keep fighting to get it to the President’s desk. Efforts in the Senate will continue, and nearly 150 House Democrats signed a discharge petition to demand a vote in the House.  We hope our Republican colleagues will stop opposing this common sense bill to increase transparency – if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear from this legislation.”
