Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 1 drilled three 800- to 1,000-foot holes in the area to assist the U.S. Navy Geothermal Program Office in their research of local geothermal energy potential.

Facilities Energy & Privatization Directorate

About Facilities Energy & Privatization

Department of Defense (DoD) facilities play a vital role in protecting the security of our country; they defend our homeland, support our service members overseas, provide places for the military community to live and work, and contribute to disaster response. DoD facilities require a reliable and affordable energy supply to sustain mission accomplishment. The Facilities Energy Directorate (Facilities Energy) is charged with improving energy management to maximize the security of DoD's energy supply in the face of volatile energy markets and growing vulnerabilities in energy delivery systems.

Our Vision

The DoD will employ cost-effective energy management technologies and techniques to assure long-term facility energy supply, enabling uninterrupted support to its worldwide forces and advancing national energy independence efforts. To realize this vision, we will:

Improved energy management will enhance energy security, reduce emissions, and produce taxpayer savings.

Building On Our Progress

DoD is America's largest energy consumer, representing about 80% of federal sector energy consumption. The Department has already reduced its facility energy consumption by 10% since 2003, but despite this success, we must make greater strides to meet the Departmental vision of providing reliable and cost-effective utility services to the warfighter. Dramatic energy cost fluctuations provided even greater incentives to conserve and seek ways to lower energy consumption. DOD's Facilities Energy Directorate will continue progressing toward energy goals through investments in cost-effective renewable energy sources, energy efficient construction designs and aggregating bargaining power among regions and Services to improve long term energy security.
