  1. This evening, I joined 338 of my colleagues in voting to pass H.R. 5865, the bipartisan American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act introduced by Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL03). As a member of the House Manufacturing Caucus, I will continue focus...
ing on legislation that spurs our economy and creates jobs.

I strongly believe in the American worker and the Senate should quickly advance this bill to promote a national manufacturing strategy. The Senate should also work on the over 30 House-passed jobs bills awaiting action and help provide our unemployed friends and neighbors with fresh job opportunities.

  3. As folks across the country and across the world remember the lives taken and the sacrifices made because of the attacks on our nation that day, let us also remember the deep feeling of unity that brought us together as Americans in the face of evil. My thoughts and prayers remain with those whose lives were taken the morning of September 11, 2001, with their loved ones, and with our country’s first responders and men and women in uniform as they work every day to protect our freedoms and keep us safe from harm.
  4. Last week I had the pleasure of speaking with a group of students at AlWood High School in Woodhull. Our children are this country’s future leaders and a strong education is an important pillar of success. I wish everyone a great school year.

  5. Here is another example of how Illinois’ unfavorable business climate and tax structure are discouraging investments from companies looking to expand. At a time of high unemployment, we should work towards solutions that attract new jobs f...
    or folks in our state.

We’re due to vote on one such solution that I am a cosponsor of this week. The bipartisan American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act (H.R. 5865), introduced by Congressman Dan Lipinksi (IL-03), sets up a public-private board tasked with devising a national strategy to revitalize American manufacturing and create jobs.

efense that the Defense Secretary has called “catastrophic.” Unfortunately, the Administration has missed the deadline but the people still deserve answers.

These devastating cuts are avoidable, but only if our leaders come together and do the job they were elected to do for our manufacturing sector, and the security of our great nation.

  7. Our economy added fewer jobs than expected (96,000) this month and 368,000 folks left the workforce altogether. We lost 15,000 manufacturing jobs, the labor participation rate is the lowest it has been in three decades, and unemployment ha...
s been above 8 percent for a record 43 straight months now. We all deserve better.

I will continue working on a bipartisan basis to provide economic certainty and stable taxes so our small business men and women can lead America to recovery.

  8. This week, I had the opportunity to speak with employees at Koppers’ Galesburg Plant. This impressive facility has more than 80 employees and focuses on producing durable railroad ties for tracks across the country.

Every rail job supports another 4.5 jobs elsewhere totaling about 12 million jobs, and I will continue working on a bipartisan basis towards a long-term transportation and infrastructure bill.

  10. What do you think about this headline?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/04/us/politics/democrats-say-us-is-better-off-than-4-years-ago.html

With forty-two months of unemployment above 8 percent, four straight years of trillion dollar deficits, and household income lower NOW than when we were in an actual recession, I believe America can and must do better.

We must pursue an all-of-the-above energy approach, establish a manufacturing strategy, make our tax code more fair, continue to encourage more public-private partnerships and create economic certainty so that small business women and men can thrive.

President John F. Kennedy provided lasting advice to educators, parents and elected officials when he said...
'Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource.' As a father and grandfather, it's important to me that our educational system is the best in the world, and that America remains a world leader. The Riverfront Campus is one of the Quad Cities many treasures, but most importantly will be invaluable in developing the minds of young adults pursuing quality higher education now and into the future.

  13. As you’ve probably noticed, gas prices have shot back up again. Today in the Quad Cities, regular gas is going for between $3.75 a gallon and $4.09 a gallon. Check it out for yourself at the link below. While Hurricane Isaac is partially to blame for these price hikes, more can be done to lessen our dependence on foreign oil, create jobs here at home, and lower prices overall.

Do you think Washington should follow Illinois’ lead and raise taxes on every business and working family?

I’ve rejected the Congressional Pension and am fighting to keep your taxes low.

  16. We all know that career politicians in Illinois raised our taxes by 66 percent. Yesterday, we found out that household income is down from recession levels, yet some in Washington still want to raise taxes.

I am fighting to keep your tax...
    es low.

As a small business owner who has made a payroll, crafted a budget, and created jobs, I believe it is foolish for government to raise taxes in a downturn economy – especially when unemployment has been above 8 percent for almost four straight years.

The House has taken bipartisan steps to keep taxes low for all Americans, keeping Illinois from losing 30,700 jobs at a time when our state’s unemployment rate is at 8.7 percent. We have also offered a plan to avoid devastating cuts to our national defense. We can find bipartisan, common ground, but we need the Senate to join us in our efforts.
