FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Some Kentuckians affected by the severe storms and flooding that struck May 3-20 will have unmet needs even after receiving help from government disaster aid programs or insurance. "Federal Emergency Management Agency and commonwealth programs are only part of the recovery process. Some survivors have long-term needs that go beyond the scope of these programs," said Brig. Gen. John W. Heltzel, director Kentucky Division of Emergency Management. "Voluntary long-term recovery committees work at the local level to provide help."
FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Specialists from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) have scheduled two upcoming meetings in Kentucky to provide the public with an opportunity to learn more about flood insurance. One meeting takes place at 1 p.m., Fri., July 24, at Big Sandy Area Development District, 110 Resource Court, Prestonsburg. The other is at 2 p.m., July 28, at Kentucky River Area Development District, 917 Perry Park Road, Hazard.

After a major flood, houses and businesses have been washed off their foundations; curbs are piled high with rotting furniture, clothing, appliances, carpeting, and other possessions waiting to be hauled to the landfill; rampant mold and mildew are destroying dry wall and ceilings; homes and offices stand gray and empty.
