The Office of Public Affairs coordinates the public affairs activities of all of the Department’s components and offices, and serves as the federal government’s lead public information office during a national emergency or disaster.

The Office of Public Affairs is the primary point of contact for news media, organizations and the general public seeking information about Department of Homeland Security's programs, policies, procedures, statistics, and services. The Office assists the Secretary on all public affairs, as well as strategic and internal communications matters.
Led by the Acting Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Matt Chandler, it comprises the press office, incident and strategic communications, speech writing, web and new media, and internal communications.
