      HELP AN ATHEIST ESCAPE RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION IN PAKISTAN The Atheist People 14 minutes ago Although I will only be back on September 17th, I wanted to take this time to post an important message from one of our community members in Pakistan. Because his freedom and security may be in danger, I will refer to this community member anonymously as Kamil. Kamil, who resides in Pakistan, is an atheist who was born into a Muslim family. Instead of betraying my ignorance about the political situation in Pakistan, I will reproduce his message here, which I have edited for easier reading. (Please know that I am unfamiliar with the laws of Pakistan, and that I have no way of verifying the facts in Kamil's case. However, because Kamil is a member of this community, and because I have been following recent developments in Pakistan, I thought I should bring his message to your attention. Hopefully, with your help, we can propose some solutions or at least offer some support to Kamil as he attempts to seek asylum in another country. I am sure Kamil will appreciate any advice, suggestions, or references that this community can provide. "Blasphemy law plays a vital role here in the theocratic state of Pakistan. Like Christians and other non-Muslims, non-believers or atheists are in considerable danger. Please let me explain what it means to be a non-believer or an atheist when you are born into a Muslim family. As per Islamic Law, you are categorized as "Murtid" or "one who left Islam." In Pakistan, those who are considered "Murtid" are punishable by death. A non-believer or atheist who does not honor and respect any religion may be tried based on two allegations: A. Apostasy; and B. Negating the Prophet, God, and Qurun. In Pakistan, many atheists live in hiding and do not declare themselves as atheists, as they may get beaten, abducted, or killed, or worse yet, their families may be made to suffer. At the moment I am fine but living here at grave risk, as I cannot openly declare myself as an atheist. If I do, I may be arrested and tried in a court of law. According to the constitution of Pakistan, apostasy is a crime which is punishable by imprisonment or death (Pakistan Penal Code 295-B). If you are released from jail, then the Mullahs may try to murder you in an effort to secure their 72 Virgins in heaven. I am trying to find some safe country to seek asylum and protection and to live my life freely and safely."
