CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency are warning Ohio residents against a particular kind of fraud that always seems to follow in the wake of a major disaster - identity theft.

September 1, 2006 - News Release

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Individuals and businesses affected by the severe storms and flooding of July 27 through August 4 have 30 days to apply for state and federal disaster assistance before the September 30 deadline. More than 5,800 residents in the designated counties of Ashtabula , Geauga, and Lake have applied for assistance and more than $15.7 million in grants and low-interest loans have been approved.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- More than $12.5 million in disaster assistance grants and loans have been approved, according to federal and state recovery officials. More than 5,500 residents have applied for disaster assistance in Ashtabula, Geauga, and Lake counties in northeast Ohio. The following is an update of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Ohio Emergency Management Agency (Ohio EMA) recovery activities as of close of business Thursday, August 24.

Individual Assistance - Dollars Approved

Individuals & Household Program (IHP): Provides money and services to people in Presidentially declared disaster areas.

Housing Assistance (HA): Provides assistance for disaster-related housing needs.

Other Needs Assistance (ONA): Provides assistance for other disaster-related needs, such as furnishings, transportation, and medical.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards

*Dollars Approved: Assistance dollars approved but not necessarily disbursed.

*Dollars Obligated: Funds made available to the State via electronic transfer following FEMA's final review and approval of Public Assistance projects.
