NOAA’s National Weather Service ranks April 2011 as the most active tornado month on record with 750 tornadoes across the U.S. There were a reported 361 fatalities. The April 27 “Super Outbreak” spawned four intensely destructive EF-5 and 11 EF-4 tornados across Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee. These storms launched an immediate response from the whole community, which included local, state, and federal agencies, voluntary, faith-based and community groups, the private sector and the public.
ATLANTA – Almost $15 million in federal assistance has been approved for individuals and business owners, as well as local, county and state governments in the 25 Georgia counties that were declared a major disaster area on April 29. The registration period for this assistance closed June 28.
ATLANTA, Ga. -- More than a dozen volunteer agencies will continue to help those affected by the late April storms and tornadoes in Georgia long after state and federal government disaster agencies have departed.

Public Assistance DefinitionsPublic Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President
Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President
Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards
