As a founder of the Congressional Nuclear Security Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, I am writing to invite you to a special, educational event addressing national nuclear security and global stability.

On Tuesday, August 14, Representative Lee Terry (NE-02) and I are hosting a public policy forum entitled, "America's Role in Global Nuclear Security." It will feature a keynote address by General C. Robert Kehler, Commander of the U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base. His talk will focus on "America's Nuclear Posture within the Broader National Security Framework." Dr. David Kay, former United Nations Chief Weapons Inspector, will also offer remarks about the "Challenges of Detecting Nuclear Transgressions." The forum will be held at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Omaha at 1:30 pm.

While nuclear security may not dominate news headlines or talk news shows on a regular basis, we as a nation must remain vigilant. The consequences of nuclear weapons proliferation represent a grave risk.

The threats are real. Iran is rapidly marching toward nuclear capabilities, and North Korea has actively tested weapons. Technologies are advancing that potentially make the spread of nuclear bomb-making materials much easier.

My office has prioritized efforts to curb such developments and prevent materials from falling into the wrong hands. Heightened awareness of the seriousness of the nuclear threat is critical.

Tuesday's forum will provide keen insights into America's leading role on nuclear security and weapons non-proliferation efforts. In addition to commentaries by Gen. Kehler and Dr. Kay, I will share commentary from a congressional perspective and help answer any questions in the interactive portion of the forum.
