WARWICK, R.I. -- The town of New Shoreham (Block Island) escaped with little impact from the March 2010 floods, but the damage and debris left behind on the mainland served as a reminder to officials on the significance of preparing for the worst. With a hazard mitigation plan set to expire in May 2011, New Shoreham officials tapped the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (REIMA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for hazard mitigation planning assistance.

WARWICK, R.I. -- The town of Bristol has reached a major milestone. It is the first jurisdiction to submit, have approved and formally adopt a hazard mitigation plan during Rhode Island’s presidentially-declared disaster (DR-1894). The adoption follows an extensive technical assistance and outreach process coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA) in response to the spring 2010 floods.

July 22, 2010 - News Release

WARWICK, R.I. -- Newly elected Rhode Island Disaster Long Term Recovery Group (RIDLTRG) Chairman Paul Salera said today he is hopeful the organization will be able to complete the job of helping flood survivors who cannot recover on their own within 12-18 months.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards

*Dollars Obligated: Funds made available to the State via electronic transfer following FEMA's final review and approval of Public Assistance projects.
