National DNA Day: News and Features

Join us April 15 for National DNA Day!

DNA Day April 15 2011 The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is "berry" excited about National DNA Day taking place this Friday, April 15! What better way to celebrate than by extracting DNA from strawberries? You can find instructions for this super-fun activity at www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOpu4iN5Bh4. Eric D. Green, M.D., Ph.D., director of NHGRI, and Carla Easter, Ph.D., a science education specialist in NHGRI's education and community involvement branch, will show you exactly how it's done. With more than 6,000 video views on our YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/GenomeTV), strawberry DNA extraction is a fan favorite!

You can also join us this Friday, April 15th for an all-day, live chatroom where you can "stump the scientist" with your toughest questions about genomics and genetics. Last year, we received hundreds of terrific questions from all over the states, which you can read at www.genome.gov/27538942.

For more hands-on activities, including crafting a DNA bracelet and growing a Tree of Genetic Traits, go to www.genome.gov/activities. For educational tools such as webcasts, podcasts, an online multimedia education kit called Understanding The Human Genome Project and the Talking Glossary of Genetic Terms, see our Education pages at www.genome.gov/Education

Understanding DNA should be made simple, a task for DNA day. Let's celebrate this day nationally.

Understanding DNA and pathways is one of the last frontiers to explore and understand. The wealth of knowledge we will gain is both profound and fundamentally altering. The changes we will see in science, medicine and society will be greater than the profound changes the internet has made to our daily lives - communication and commerce.
