Pacific Athletes of the Week: Sept. 13, 2012

Lorden Aguon

Guam High football

Last week — Piloted an offense that helped the Panthers upend defending Guam Interscholastic Football League champion George Washington 19-8 on Saturday at the Panthers’ home field, avenging last year’s 14-0 defeat in the Bamboo Bowl championship game.

Aguon, a junior quarterback, rushed nine times for 71 yards, including a touchdown run, and was 14-for-30 passing for 180 yards, including a 27-yard scoring pass to Tegan Brown. The Panthers, who’ve begun the season 3-0, racked up 300 offensive yards against the Geckos, while GW gained less than a half of that, 132.

“Lorden is an outstanding example of a true student-athlete,” coach Jacob Dowdell said. “He is a leader on and off the field. Lorden is a key instrument in making this season go from rebuilding to 3-0. He is a model student and has an exemplary reputation among everyone at Guam High School as well as in the Guam community.”

Ashley Clement

Seoul American volleyball

Last week — Played her first two Korean-American Interscholastic Activities Conference matches as starting setter and responded by leading the Falcons to victories in each match. Clement was stepping into the shoes of Tiffaney Mitchell, who led the Falcons to the 2010 Far East Division I Tournament title.

Facing Yongsan International-Seoul and Daegu at home on Friday and Saturday, Clement, a junior, racked up 46 set assists and went 34-for-38 from the serving line as the Falcons beat the Guardians 25-11, 19-25, 25-20, 25-14, then survived a five-setter against the Warriors 15-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-13 in a battle of former Far East tournament champion teams.

Despite her lack of experience at setter, Clement has helped alleviate coach Lori Rogers’ major worry entering the season, “Ashley knows the court and she has quickly learned the preferences and tendencies of her hitters,” Rogers said. “I am excited to watch her progress and grow this season.”
