Civic Engagement

Civic Engagement = Service Learning + Community Service
A learning partnership in the community

"We are the ones we have been waiting for"
– Barack Obama, President of the United States of America

The mission of Bristol Community College's (BCC's) Civic Engagement Program is to enhance student learning through the integration of academic learning in courses or through participation in community service, while encouraging civic engagement, social responsibility, development of workforce and community leadership skills and the ability to reflect on the connection between civic engagement and academic achievement.

Where do I start?

We have information for Students, Faculty, Service Club Advisors and Community Partners right here on the web.

SERVE LEARN LEAD Program

What are the Steps for Student Involvement in BCC’s SERVE, LEARN, LEAD Civic Engagement Program?

  1. Train to Serve:
Students must read the online Pre-Service Training Guide and take the online Pre-Service Self-Test available from the Student page before performing service-learning or community service for the first time at BCC.

  2. Serve and Learn:
A student who completes Pre-Service Training is eligible to perform unpaid Community Service at a non-profit agency or organization that meets a real need in the community for a minimum of 10 hours during a semester for either Service-Learning or Community Service projects. A student who engages in service learns practical work-related skills while making a real difference in his or her community. Additionally, a student who engages in Service-Learning and completes a reflection activity assigned by the course receives the notation “Service-Learning Component” under the title of the course on his or her academic transcript.

  3. Train to Lead:
Students who have completed 2 Service-Learning and/or Community Service projects are eligible to participate in Community Service Leadership Training.

  4. Lead:
Students who have completed Community Service Leadership Training recruit and help supervise peers performing service for either a Service-Learning or Community Service project.
