NLM National Telemedicine Initiative
Telemedicine Symposium Proceedings Available
A draft version of the CDROM from the Telemedicine Symposium (March 13 and 14, 2001) is now available on the web only. See http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/telesymp.html. Also included are other documents and information pertaining to NLM's Telemedicine Initiative.
Overview
NLM, in October 1996, announced the award of 19 multi-year telemedicine projects which are intended to serve as models for:
- Evaluating the impact of telemedicine on cost, quality, and access to health care;
- Assessing various approaches to ensuring the confidentiality of health data transmitted via electronic networks;
- Testing emerging health data standards.
The projects funded affect rural, inner-city, and suburban areas. They evaluate the use of telemedicine in a wide variety of settings. Two additional projects were announced in September 1997. Summaries for these projects and links to their web sites are available.
As appropriate, projects will review and apply recommendations from two National Academy of Sciences studies on criteria for evaluation of telemedicine and practices to ensure confidentiality of electronic health data. NLM is the principal funder of these studies.
