May 5, 2011 - News Release

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security announced today that FEMA has obligated $1,046,295 in Public Assistance funds to the state of Connecticut to reimburse state agencies, local governments and eligible private nonprofit organizations for costs associated with the January 11-12 snowstorm. Additional funds will be obligated as FEMA continues to process applications.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced that federal disaster aid has been made available the state of Connecticut and ordered federal aid to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the area struck by a snowstorm during the period of January 11-12, 2011.

Following is a summary of key federal disaster aid programs that can be made available as needed and warranted under President Obama’s major disaster declaration issued for Connecticut. Assistance for State and Eligible Local Governments Can Include as Required:

Financial Assistance

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards

*Dollars Approved: Assistance dollars approved but not necessarily disbursed.

*Dollars Obligated: Funds made available to the State via electronic transfer following FEMA's final review and approval of Public Assistance projects.
