Soldiers are not just in the Army -- they are the Army, and when they overcome personal hurdles, the Army is that much stronger from it. Resiliency training for Soldiers is just as essential as any other military training. Discussing theories is important, but working the techniques into practical, every day activities is where the rubber meets the road. "Soldier resiliency is a Soldier's ability to bounce back from adverse situations much wiser, stronger, and better equipped," said Capt. Vincent L. Hardy, the chaplain for 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment. "Each experience shows a person a new facet about themselves and it brings out new coping mechanisms. The bottom line is that the information, if utilized, can help a person or family unit bounce back from adversity wiser and stronger." Resiliency training is just one part of the Army's holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to suicide prevention.

The four aircraft formed a perfect line, then parted ways and danced delicately into individual parking places Saturday at Fort Campbell, Ky. The trip was over, and the Medevac crews were ready to begin what was left of their 4-day weekend. Within only hours of notification, eight crews of Eagle Dustoff (Company C, 7th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade) traveled to Fort Rucker, Ala., Thursday. They were staged for potential search-and-rescue missions, ready to assist at a moment's notice. With the National Guard and the other government agencies in place, the Medevac crews were not needed and returned home. Response time can mean the difference between life and death, and the Army excels at rehearsing for all kinds of emergencies.

For nearly five weeks, 10 crew chiefs with 4th and 7th battalions, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, have been studying standards and immersed in instruction as they take the Aircraft Crewmember Standard Instruction course. The objective of the course is to qualify the crewmembers to be flight instructors, meaning they will have all the tools they need to be a certified flight instructor. Soon, the crew chiefs who graduate from the course will be able to train and evaluate future crew chiefs. This means they will be even more proficient in tasks such as aircraft systems, malfunction analysis, aviation medicine and other aviation safety subjects.

Soldiers of the Task Force Wings (4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade) spent four days, Aug. 21-24, rehearsing their quick-response deployment readiness capabilities. The brigade exercised all facets of preparing an aviation task force, including its supporting elements, to deploy on short or no notice, from initial notification to loading the aircraft with personnel, gear and equipment. "In the event we get a prepare-to-deploy order, we have to be capable of getting ourselves out the door with short notice and internal assets, meaning the majority of our support is coming out of our brigade," said Maj. Kareem J. Toomer, the brigade's support operations officer.

Roughly 2,200 supporters participated in the 2012 Week of the Eagles' Run for the Fallen, Saturday, which began at the Sabalauski Air Assault School. Attendees honored fallen heroes by participating in the 5th Annual Run for the Fallen, a tribute event that involved a 3.2-mile run or 2-mile walk.

The moon still hovers in a predawn sky, visibility is low but the distinct sound of Soldiers adjusting their kits, boots and gear can still be strongly heard. They step off into the dark, the first of many in the next 12- miles, which has to be to be finished in under three hours time. This is the Toughest Air Assault Soldier Competition. Soldiers from each brigade are tested on their physical stamina, attention to detail and knowledge of tactical aerial operations. By day's end, one team will be the Toughest Air Assault Soldiers in Fort Campbell.

The Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), competed in a tournament during Week of the Eagles to determine the best Soccer team in the division. Beginning with nine teams consisting of Soldiers from all across Fort Campbell, the championship was decided Aug. 15. The tournament stretched out over three-days and was a test of all the preparations leading up to Week of the Eagles 2012.

Go figure, one of the most competitive five and ten kilometer races at Fort Campbell is a called a Fun Run. They are both a timed team event, in which the outcome depends on an individual's performance. Each brigade within the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), has representing teams for each race. The teams met up on the Sunday morning of Aug. 12 at Fort Campbell's Sabalauski Air Assault School and put on display all of that hard work and physical training they've invested in for this 'fun' competition.

"Dakota" was announced over the Air Battle Net, indicating the flight of four CH-47s with dual shotgun HMMWVs on long lines had reached the release point and would starburst to four separate landing zones. After about one minute of flight, all aircraft lost communication with each other due to the limited line of sight and aged, failing equipment. In zero illumination, I was in the lead aircraft using my limited experience and flight training to find an LZ, which was located along the border of a non-allied country in a very austere environment. Once we delivered the load and our passengers, we exited the LZ en route to the start point. Our plan was to link up with the flight as we returned to the pickup zone for one more trip into the objective area. Just shy of the SP, I heard a broken radio transmission over the ABN: "The HMMWVs are in a pile, but we're OK."

Iron Rakkasans - both young and old - gathered Friday to remember the Battle of Hill 937, better known as Hamburger Hill. The 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Soldiers fought valiantly at Vietnam's Dong Ap Bia mountain in May 1969. A part of Operation Apache Snow, these Soldiers battled tough terrain to overcome the North Vietnamese forces' stronghold at the hill. The Rakkasans went on to eliminate more than 500 enemy troops and seize stores of weaponry.

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced March 1 his recommendaiton to the President that he nominate Army Gen. James D. Thurman to take command of U.S. Forces in the Republic of Korea. A native of Marietta, Okla., Thurman currently commands U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM), the U.S. Army's largest organization, where he is responsible for the oversight, manning, training, and equipping of 237,000 Active Component Soldiers and the training and readiness oversight of 560,000 Soldiers of the Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve. Dr. Gates made the announcement during a Pentagon press briefing. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Thurman would succeed Army Gen. Walter "Skip" Sharp in Korea who is set to retire after his tour as commander of the 28,500 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea.
