Summer is a great time for get-togethers—from barbecues to group dinners and pot-lucks. But before you fill your plate to capacity, remember the old saying: a moment on the lips can mean years on the hips.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you “Healthy Moments” from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Controlling the portions you eat is essential to staying at a healthy weight, which can prevent health problems such as diabetes, kidney disease, and heart disease. At picnics and parties, it’s tempting to “go all in,” but you’ll feel better if you know your limits.
Take mac and cheese for example—one serving is one cup, which is about the size of your fist. For meats, one serving is 3 ounces, which is about the size of a deck of cards. And when it comes to sweets, treat yourself on special occasions, not every day.
