Office of the Command Surgeon

Welcome

Welcome to the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) Surgeon website. The Command Surgeon for AFRICOM is the senior medical advisor to the Commander and senior staff for all matters related to health service support and force health protection in the AFRICOM area of responsibility to include 53 sovereign nations. All countries on the African continent are included in AFRICOM except for Egypt, which falls under CENTCOM. The Command Surgeon also provides guidance to six component Surgeons representing four services (Air Force/AFAFRICA, Army/USARAF, NAVY/NAVAF, and Marines/MARFOAF), one sub-unified command (Special Operations/SOCAF), and a Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF-HOA). The Command Surgeon's staff is comprised of four individuals: Deputy (dual hatted as the Medical Division Chief), Executive Director, Epidemiologist and Executive Assistant. The Command Surgeon reports directly to the AFRICOM Commander. The Medical Division under the leadership of the Deputy Command Surgeon is part of the Operations & Logistics Directorate (J3/4) and has a close working relationship with the Command Surgeon. The Medical Division is comprised of a joint team of civilian and military medical specialists, which includes medical planners, international health specialists, environmental & public health officers, and an infectious disease specialist. It is subdivided into three branches to include Force Health Protection, Long Range Plans, and Medical Operations.

The primary lines of effort supported by the Medical Division are force health protection, support of ongoing operations & exercises, and building military medical capacity & capability on the African continent. All lines of effort are in direct support of the theatre strategic objectives established by the AFRICOM Commander. AFRICOM is a unique COCOM with robust interagency representation at the headquarters on Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart, Germany. A whole of government approach is the key when working with partner nations across the spectrum of defense, development and diplomacy. Interagency synchronization involving medical issues is highlighted at AFRICOM through the Military Health Forum. This monthly gathering of subject matter experts allows for enhanced communication between the Command Surgeons office, USAID, and other key partners at AFRICOM and results in medical recommendations to senior leadership at the headquarters. An underlying focus which drives the Military Health Forum is the DODI on Medical Stability Operations and the President's Global Health Initiative.

Within this website, you will find information pertaining to the mission of the Command Surgeon/Medical Division, specifics involving our organization to include contact information, and links to relevant medical sites. Our goal is to make this a one-stop shopping site that will hopefully enhance communication and knowledge involving medically relevant topics to AFRICOM. We are here to serve. If you have any questions or concerns related to this site, please contact our webmaster at DSN 421-4626.
