On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of the Independent State of Samoa as you celebrate the 49th anniversary of your nation’s independence this June 1.

The United States and Samoa share a warm friendship based on mutual interests and mutual respect, strengthened by our common goals in the Pacific region. We are working together to promote economic development, curb the effects of climate change and bolster regional rule of law.

Throughout the last half century, Americans of Samoan descent have contributed in numerous ways to American culture. During the Korean and Vietnam wars, Samoans stood side by side with other American soldiers. Today, they are leaders in the political arena and on the athletic field. They are influencing music and dance. Throughout our society, Samoans are positively contributing to the American experience.

The United States looks forward to continuing to strengthen this important relationship and we wish all Samoans around the world a happy and prosperous year.
