    About
  1. Today I authored a letter to Acting U.S. Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank requesting a federal fisheries disaster declaration for oyster harvesting operations in Apalachicola Bay and the surrounding region. I am committed to providing our oystermen with the resources to assess the causes of the steep decline in North Florida’s oyster population and identify how best to secure a long term recovery.
  2. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of Ambassador Stevens and the three other Americans who were killed as part of an unwarranted attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya. This is an attack on freedom and, in response, we must come together as Americans and display a resolve that makes clear that we won’t accept an attack on Americans abroad.
  3. On the 11th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, we remember those whose lives were lost and honor the first responders who gave their lives in an effort to keep their neighbors safe. Let us never forget the sense of unity that bound us as Americans in the days and weeks after the attacks.
  4. With the August jobs report released, we see yet again that the economic policies of the President are not working. 43 consecutive month of 8% or higher unemployment. More Americans are out of the labor force, not seeking work. We must continue fighting for pro-growth policies on Main Street and not in Washington.
  5. Toured the Advanced Technology Center at Gulf Coast State College in Panama City today. I am pleased to have participated in the planning process of this facility when I served on the Bay County Chamber of Commerce. The center will supply technical training for Bay County's workforce, helping to attract new companies and grow jobs in Northwest Florida.

  7. The national debt clock just hit $16 trillion today. More spending is not the solution. We must get our fiscal house in order NOW.
  8. My thanks again to 60 Plus for awarding me their “Guardian of Seniors Rights Award.” Please take a moment to check out the presentation with Jim Martin, the Chairman of 60 Plus.
  9. I hope that you and your family are having a safe and enjoyable Labor Day!
  10. When I came to Washington, I pledged to fight for Florida’s seniors and protect Medicare. I am proud to have kept that promise by voting to restore $716 billion in Medicare funding that was cut under the health care reform law and opposing...
a debt limit deal that cut nearly $150 billion more. I appreciate this prestigious recognition from 60 Plus with the understanding that there is much work remaining in addressing the challenges facing our seniors.

  11. While the federal government begins its preliminary damage assessments, Governor Rick Scott announced the activation of Florida’s disaster fund to help Floridians recover from two recent storms. Please click below for more information.
  12. Today I was proud to receive the "Standing Up for America's Seniors Award" from RetireSafe. I made a pledge to you that, in Congress, I'd fight for Florida's seniors and to protect Medicare and that is exactly what I will continue to do!

  13. NOAA Fisheries today announced that, after a nearly 1,000-day closure, it will reopen the red snapper season in the South Atlantic for two weekends in September. Click below to read my response, and please let me know your thoughts.
  14. Although it appears that Isaac will spare Florida's Second Congressional District a direct hit, let us keep in our thoughts and prayers the families that are in harm's way. Also, to assist our coastal communities, I have included the emergency contact information for the local counties most likely to be impacted by the storm. We are here to serve you if you have any concerns. Stay safe and God bless.
  15. We lost a true hero today who inspired a generation of Americans to reach for the stars. My prayers go out to the family of Neil Armstrong.
  16. Thanks to House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings and all of the Gulf Coast fishermen who attended our fisheries field hearing in Panama City.

  17. I am pleased that today’s field hearing provided an opportunity for our fishermen to have their voices heard by their government. As an avid angler myself, I share serious concerns about a Magnuson-Stevens law that is broken. For the sake our fishermen, as well as the operators of marinas, hotels, restaurants, and small businesses who rely on their continued success, Congress must commit to making the law more workable and responsive to the needs of our coastal communities. The federal government should have no role in picking winners and losers with the goal of locking up our fisheries with overregulation, free of congressional oversight and public opinion.
  18. Check out my op-ed in today's News Herald coinciding with our fisheries field hearing.
  19. I am excited to host Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings for our fisheries field hearing in Panama City tomorrow. If you have an interest in preserving our Gulf Coast fishing heritage, please join us at FSU-PC's Holley Center at 10am CT. This is an official congressional event, so please do not wear campaign t-shirts or bring campaign materials with you. Looking forward to a great event. Thank you!
