Introduction

Welcome to the Testing Software Applications and Operating Systems for 508 Compliance Course for VHA personnel.

Purpose

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act requires that electronic and information technology (E&IT) conform to specific standards designed to insure accessibility by users who have disabilities. Two technical subparts that refer to the accessibility of E&IT are:

  • Software Applications and Operating Systems (§1194.21)
  • Web-based Intranet and Internet Information and Applications (§1194.22)

This training provides explanations of the Section 508 requirements for software applications and operating systems set forth in paragraphs (a) through (l) of §1194.21, Software Applications and Operating Systems. §1194.21 also applies to software applications that are embedded in or deployed on the web (for example, Flash, QuickTime and Java applications that appear in HTML pages).

The goal of this course is to enable testers and product developers to understand the principles of accessible software design as they relate to Section 508, and to recognize whether or not those requirements have been met.
