We are pleased to announce that the next annual MARINe Workshop will be held October 2-3, 2009, at Fort Mason in San Francisco. Fort Mason is a former US Army Post that is managed by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It is located along San Francisco Bay near Fisherman's Wharf.

Initial plans include a Friday morning Science/Database Panel Meeting, main Workshop sessions Friday afternoon and Saturday, and a possible field trip Saturday afternoon to view sites impacted by the Cosco Busan spill. Friday evening will feature dinner and a keynote speaker. An additional subgroup meeting may be scheduled for Thursday prior to the main Workshop.

Workshop themes include Impacts from Oil Spills and Other Human Activities, Shoreline Mapping Initiative, and Findings from Monitored Studies. We welcome suggestions for additional presentation and discussion topics.

Mark your calendars and save the dates for MARINE's 9th Annual Workshop! Further information will be sent as it becomes available. Let us know if there are individuals who would like to be added or dropped from our Workshop email list.

Best regards,

The MARINe Workshop was held October 10th and 11th at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, in San Pedro, California. It was hosted this year by UCLA and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.

The event began with a morning Science Panel meeting and discussions on MARINe's potential role in oil spill response and damage assessment, and ended with a "Go-Kit" demonstration at the MARINe Point Fermin site.

The keynote address, given by Dr. Steve Weisberg, Director of the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, focused on MARINe's interface with long-term water quality monitoring. The workshop was attended by scientists from over 25 individual organizations.
