Assisted Living Pilot Program for Veterans with TBIPublic Law 110-118, the Fiscal Year 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Title XVII, Section 1705 directed Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to implement a five year pilot program to assess the effectiveness of providing Assisted Living (AL) services to eligible Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) to enhance their rehabilitation, quality of life, and community integration. In May 2011, a national contract was awarded to 20 contractors providing more than 150 sites of care across the US. All contractors are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) with certification in residential rehabilitation in a brain injury program.Veterans enrolled in the pilot have suffered moderate to severe TBI, often with significant medical and psychiatric co-morbidities which require intensive care coordination. Case management services for Veterans enrolled in the AL-TBI pilot program are provided by VA Social Work/Case Managers, Registered Nurses, or other health care professionals trained in TBI care.
