New Export Data Shows 36 States Experienced Double Digit Growth of Merchandise Exports
Exports contribute to record-setting $2.1 trillion of U.S. goods and services
WASHINGTON – The International Trade Administration (ITA) today announced that U.S. merchandise exports increased $202 billion to a record $1.48 trillion from 2010 to 2011, driven by a $43 billion increase in exports from Texas. Thirty-six states experienced double-digit merchandise export growth in 2011; 23 states exceeded the national average of 16 percent growth for merchandise exports.
“America has a strong competitive edge in the global marketplace,” said Under Secretary of International Trade Francisco Sánchez. “Consumers worldwide have a strong affinity for U.S. goods and services, and appreciate American-brand name values and U.S. companies’ reputation for quality, performance, and after-the sale service. The most recent figures show that U.S. exports are fueling our economic recovery.”
Exports are a bright spot in the U.S. economy and are a driver of economic growth. Total merchandise exports from the 50 U.S. states helped contribute to the record-setting value of goods and services exports which reached $2.1 trillion in 2011. Altogether, U.S. merchandise exports increased 16 percent increase over the previous year, which puts the U.S. on track to meet the President’s National Export Initiative goals of doubling U.S. exports by the end of 2014.
Texas accounted for 21 percent of the nation’s increase in merchandise exports from 2010-2011.
Together Texas, California, Illinois, Louisiana and New York accounted for one-half of the increase in goods exports from 2010-2011.
