Brigadier General Warren E. Phipps Jr. Deputy Director for Regional Operations, J3

BG Warren E. Phipps Jr. is Deputy Director for Regional Operations, J-3, for the Joint Staff. His most recent assignment was as Deputy Commanding General (Support), 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Combined Joint Task Force-101, Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in Aviation from United States Military Academy on 25 May 1982.
He has commanded 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, Fort Campbell, Kentucky; 2d Squadron, 6th Cavalry, Illesheim, Germany, and C Troop, 4th Squadron, 6th Cavalry, Fort Hood, Texas. He has held leadership and staff positions in 8th Combat Aviation Battalion, Mainz-Finthen, Germany; 6th Cavalry Brigade (Air Combat), Fort Hood, Texas; 229th Aviation Regiment (Attack) (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His operational deployments include Joint Guard in Bosnia, Allied Force in Kosovo, Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, and Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
He has served also as Deputy Commanding General and Chief of Staff for US Army Aviation Center, an operations officer in J-3 on the Joint Staff, a program analyst in Program Analysis and Evaluation Directorate on the Army Staff, and as an assistant professor at the United States Military Academy.
He is a graduate of Air Defense Officer’s Basic Course, Initial Entry Rotary Wing Course, Aviation Officers’ Advanced Course, Combined Arms Service Staff School, US Army Command and Staff College, and US National War College. He holds Master of Science degrees in Applied Mathematics from Naval Postgraduate School and National Security Studies from the National War College.
