Remembering 9/11

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - Members of NORAD and USNORTHCOM watch as Don Addy, Chairman of the Colorado 30 Group, and Army Maj. Gen. Charles Luckey, NORAD and USNORTHCOM Chief of Staff, lay a wreath at the headquarters 9/11 memorial Sept. 11, 2012. Every year, the NORAD and USNORTHCOM staff remember the victims of the 9/11 attacks with a ceremony commemorating their sacrifice. The memorial is comprised of three parts: The recovered steel beam pays respect to the lives lost in New York and points in the city’s direction. The five-sided planter honors those who died at the Pentagon, and the soil in the planter comes from Pennsylvania to pay respect to the people who died on Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, Penn.

Honoring MAFFS 7

BOISE, Idaho - The flag outside the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, flies at half-staff July 10, 2012, in honor of the four crewmembers of MAFFS 7 who were killed when their MAFFS-equipped C-130 crashed during a fire fighting mission in South Dakota July 1. All Department of Agriculture and Department of Interior agencies flew their flags at half-staff to coincide with the crewmembers' memorial service held in Charlotte, N.C., that same day.

MAFFS supports wildland fire fighting efforts

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - A MAFFS-equipped C-130 from the 146th Airlift Wing of the California Air National Guard arrives at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., June 30, to support wildland fire fighting operations in the western United States. Four MAFFS units are scheduled to arrive June 30, joining four already operating out of Peterson AFB. The eight MAFFS constitute the entire U.S. military MAFFS fleet. The four units supporting the fire fighting effort are the 302nd Airlift Wing from Peterson AFB, the 146th Airlift Wing from Channel Islands, Calif., the 153rd Airlift Wing from Cheyenne, Wyo., and the 145th Airlift Wing from Charlotte, N.C.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 153rd Airlift Wing from Cheyenne, WY use a Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems (MAFFS) equipped C-130 Hercules aircraft in support of the Waldo Canyon wild fire in Colorado Springs, CO on June 27, 2012. Four MAFFS-equipped aircraft from the 302nd and 153rd Airlift Wings flew in support of the U.S. Forest Service as they fought fires in Colorado. MAFFS is a self-contained aerial firefighting system that can discharge 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant in less than five seconds, covering an area one-quarter of a mile long by 100 feet wide.

Supporting Wounded Warriors

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Master Sgt. Christopher “Aggie” Aguilera, 66th Rescue Squadron aerial gunner, poses for a photo with Maj. Gen. Howard Thompson, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command chief of staff, and Col. Aguilera was one of two survivors from a HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter crash in southwest Afghanistan that killed five Airmen June 9, 2010. He has returned to active duty in the Air Force, and is discovering a new normal for his life as he adapts to his injuries. Aguilera is a member of the 2012 Air Force Team for the Warrior Games in rifle and pistol shooting, various track events, sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball.

MAFFS Annual Training

The U.S. Forest Service and the 302nd AW held their annual air tanker certification training April 20 through 23 at Peterson Air Force Base and Pueblo Air Tanker Base, Colo. The U.S. Forest Service-led training was designed to ensure the Air Force Reserve MAFFS crews are ready for the upcoming 2012 firefighting season and included 12 hours of ground training and 35 C-130 training missions in southern Colorado. Air Force Reserve MAFFS-equipped C-130s can be requested by the National Interagency Fire Center and then activated through the U.S. Northern Command, based on an agreement with the Department of Defense.

Exercise SILVER RISK

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Staff Sgt. Joshua Cookson, common operating picture manager, Task Force 51, U.S. Army North, and Air Force Staff Sgt. Michael Davis, Illinois Air National Guard, work to establish procedures for a common operating picture during Exercise Silver Risk. The exercise focuses on the Dual-Status Command concept that will be used as the Department of Defense and Illinois National Guardsmen support the NATO Summit scheduled May 19-20 in Chicago. Led by the Illinois National Guard, it is the first time TF 51 Soldiers and civilians have participated under the authority of a dual-status command during a large scale command post exercise. Cookson said the COP being used was developed primarily at Army North, with some modifications being made by the Illinois Guard for its use.

The purpose of this year’s summit is to bring together Canadian and U.S. CBRN personnel from local, state, national and military organizations to give the current composition of the CBRN Response Enterprise a hard look and determine if changes need to be made.

Dual Status Commanders Orientation

FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas — Army Maj. Gen. Charles Gailes (center), the commanding general of U.S. Army North’s Task Force 51, along with visiting dual-status commanders, listen to a command briefing Feb. 7 during the Dual Status Commanders Orientation at Army North’s Main Conference Room at the historic Quadrangle. Gailes hosted the briefing and provided the opening remarks. The one-day stop at Army North was part of a larger series of conferences conducted by U.S. Northern Command for commanders who serve in a combined federal-state position.

Permanent Joint Board on Defense

OTTAWA - Canadian Forces Lieutenant-General Walter Semianiw, Canada Command commander (left) and Army Gen. Charles Jacoby, Jr., North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command commander, sign military to military plans in Ottawa, Jan. 25, to enhance defense cooperation between Canada and the United States should the governments require each other's assistance. The documents signed were the Civil Assistance Plan, the Combined Defence Plan and an Information Sharing Memorandum of Understanding. Jacoby signed the CAP and the CDP in his capacity as the commander of USNORTHCOM and the MOU as the commander of NORAD and USNORTHCOM. The signings followed the 228th meeting of the Permanent Joint Board on Defence in Ottawa.

UH-72 display

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Bill Ryan, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command National Guard Special Staff, takes a look at the glass cockpit of a UH-72 Lakota helicopter during a demonstration and static display Jan. 24. Members of the Mississippi Army National Guard flew the UH-72 to Peterson AFB to educate members of NORAD and USNORTHCOM on possible applications for the aircraft. The UH-72 features an advanced glass cockpit and communications equipment and can be used for reconnaissance and security or medical evacuation missions.

Caldwell takes command of Army North, Fort Sam Houston

FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas — Army Lt. Gen. William Caldwell IV, commanding general, U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) and Fort Sam Houston, shares his insights with a gathering of fellow senior military leaders, elected officials, family, friends, fellow service members and civilian partners during his Assumption of Command ceremony Jan. 12 at Fort Sam Houston’s historic Quadrangle. Caldwell carries on a family legacy that commenced 34 years earlier when his father, retired Lt. Gen. William Caldwell III, took command of Fifth Army in San Antonio in 1978; he served as the unit’s commanding general until his retirement in 1980.

Fla. Gov. visits Tyndall

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. - Col. Randy Spear (second from left), 601st Air and Space Operations Center commander, points out a simulated "track of interest" on a radar screen during an exercise to Florida Gov. Gen. Jacoby visits 3rd Fleet

SAN DIEGO - A formation of Sailors, assigned to Commander, U.S. Third Fleet, render honors to Commander, NORAD and USNORTHCOM, Army Gen. Charles Jacoby, during a visit to Third Fleet headquarters in San Diego. Jacoby met with Commander, U.S. Third Fleet, Vice Adm. Gerald R. Beaman for a routine visit. U.S. Third Fleet leads naval forces in the eastern Pacific from the west coast of North America to the International Date Line.
