Department of Homeland Security

PNNL stewards an extensive portfolio supporting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), covering all phases of innovation — research and development, engineering, testing, deployment, training, and operations. Our staff were on the ground when DHS was being formed and remain heavily involved and deeply committed to the mission of protecting our nation from accidental, intentional, and natural disasters. PNNL's priority is to work with federal program managers and stakeholders to identify needs, create scientific approaches and technologies to meet those needs, deploy and test those approaches and technologies, and use the results to continue to inform the science and technology development process.

The Homeland Security Act of 2002 authorizes special access to PNNL, and DOE's network of other National Laboratories, to assist any component of DHS in accomplishing its mission. DHS, DOE's Office of Science and National Nuclear Security Administration jointly sponsored the new Physical Sciences Facility, a 200,000-square-foot laboratory that houses radiological, material sciences, and chemical research capabilities.

PNNL engages regional partners through the Northwest Regional Technology Center for Homeland Security, which serves as a model for bringing together state, local, tribal, private sector, and regional agencies and jurisdictions involved in all aspects of homeland security — prevention, detection, response, and recovery — and helps build regional resilience.
