NCES 2012345 Trends Among Young Adults Over Three Decades, 1974-2006
This report describes patterns of continuity and change over time in four areas of the transition to adulthood among young adults as measured 2 years after their senior year of high school. The four areas are postsecondary enrollment, labor force roles, family formation, and civic engagement. The analysis population is spring-term high school seniors in 1972, 1980, 1992, and 2004. The data come from four separate NCES sponsored studies: the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 (NLS:72), High School and Beyond (HS&B), the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88), and the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002).

NCES 2012256 Web Tables—Occupational and Academic Majors in Postsecondary Education: 6-Year Education and Employment Outcomes, 2001 and 2009.
These Web Tables compare the 6-year education and labor force outcomes for beginning undergraduates who initially enrolled in postsecondary education in 1995–96 and 2003–04 by whether they majored in an academic or occupational field of study. The data are from two iterations of the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:96/01 and BPS:04/09). The first followed first-time undergraduates who began postsecondary education in 1995–96 until June 2001, and the second followed first-time undergraduates who began postsecondary education in 2003–04 until June 2009. Occupational fields in postsecondary education include a range of majors, including business and marketing and health sciences, and account for a majority of undergraduate postsecondary students.

NCES 2012246 2004/09 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:04/09) Methodology Report
This report describes the methods and procedures used in the 2004/09 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:04/09). These students, who started their postsecondary education during the 2003-04 academic year, were first interviewed as part of the 2004 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:04). BPS:04/09 is the second and final follow-up interview of this cohort. This report provides the methodology and outcomes of the BPS:04/09 student interview data collection, transcript data collection, and administrative records matching. The BPS study is unique in that it includes both traditional and nontraditional students, follows their paths through postsecondary education over the course of 6 years, and is not limited to enrollment at a single institution. For the first time in BPS, transcripts were collected from all of the postsecondary institutions attended by the sample. Together, the student interview and transcript data collections represent a significant and rich data source on this cohort of first-time beginning students.

NCES 2011151 Persistence and Attainment of 2003–04 Beginning Postsecondary Students: After Six Years
This First Look report provides a brief description of the persistence and degree attainment of a nationally representative sample of students who began postsecondary education for the first time in the 2003-04 academic year. The report provides a first look at the experience of these students over six academic years, from 2003-04 to 2008-09, and provides information about the rates at which students completed degrees, transferred to other institutions, and left postsecondary education without attaining degrees. It provides direct comparisons of the institutional retention and completion rates of undergraduates at the first institution attended versus the persistence and attainment rates of the same group of students anywhere in postsecondary education after six years. Findings show that 49 percent of students who began postsecondary education in 2003-04 earned a credential by June 2009, ranging from an educational certificate to a bachelors degree. Another 15 percent remained enrolled, but had not yet completed a program of study; and about one-third (36 percent) left postsecondary education without a credential of any kind by June 2009.

BPS:04/09 is the second follow-up of this cohort. The BPS:04/09 field test was used to plan, implement, and evaluate methodological procedures, instruments, and systems proposed for use in the full-scale study scheduled for the 2008-09 school year. The report provides the sampling design and methodologies used in the field test. It also describes data collection outcomes, including response rates, interview burden, and results of incentive, mailing, and prompting experiments. In addition, the report provides details on the evaluation of data quality for reliability of responses, item nonresponse, and question delivery and data entry error. Recommendations for the full-scale study are provided for the sampling design, locating and tracing procedures, interviewer training, data collection, and instrumentation.
