Carving up the Arctic

Is rapid ice melt changing the world's geopolitical landscape?

In 2012 alone an area of the Arctic bigger than the United States melted, leaving ice cover at a new record low. As the vanishing sea ice opens up formerly unnavigable areas to shipping and drilling of oil, the world’s superpowers are increasingly eyeing military and economic opportunities. Will this environmental crisis bring about a change in the geopolitical landscape?

In this episode of The Stream, we speak to:

Marcus King
Professor, George Washington University

Gustaf Lind @saochair
Chairman, Arctic Council

Rob Huebert
Political Science Professor, University of Calgary

What do you think? As the Arctic ice melts, will it change the global geopolitical landscape?
