SCOSTEP organizes and conducts international solar-terrestrial programs
(STP) programs of finite duration in cooperation with other
International Council For Science(ICSU) bodies. Results from these
programs are shared with the community of SCOSTEP scientists by joining
in conducting meetings, conferences, and workshops and by publishing
newsletters, handbooks and special journal issues.
Climate And Weather of the Sun-Earth System (CAWSES) SCOSTEP'S comprehensive international STP program for 2004 - 2008
CAWSES comprises four scientific themes represented by Working Groups.
They are:
* WG-1: Solar Influence on Climate, Co-Chairs: M. Lockwood and L. Gray;
* WG-2: Space Weather: Science & Applications, Co-Chairs: J. Kozyra and
K. Shibata;
* WG-3: Atmospheric Coupling Processes, Co-Chairs: F.-J. Luebken and
J. Alexander; and
* WG-4: Space Climatology, Co-Chairs: C. Froehlich and J. Sojka.
CAWSES is an international program sponsored by
SCOSTEP (Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics) established
with an aim of significantly enhancing our understanding of the space
environment and its impacts on life and society. The main functions of
CAWSES are to help coordinate international activities in observations,
modeling, and applications crucial to achieving this understanding, to
involve scientists in both developed and developing countries, and to
provide educational opportunities for students of all levels.
Scientific activities of CAWSES was under the
oversight of a Scientific Steering Group (SSG) led by Dr. Sunanda Basu.
Prof. Susan Avery assumed the Chair of CAWSES since 1 August 2006. The
CAWSES Program Office currently resides at Boston University. The
Scientific Coordinator is Dr. D. Pallamraju (raju@cawses.bu.edu). Full
details about CAWSES are on-line at the website: http://www.bu.edu/cawses.
The Education and Capacity Building aspect of CAWSES is presently a
responsibility of R. Vincent, B. Schmieder, and G. Lu (SCOSTEP
Executive Officers), on behalf of the SCOSTEP Bureau.
As part of Capacity Building effort, a series of educational comic
books have been produced under the supervision and guidance of Prof. Y.
Kamide. It is a collaborative project between the Solar-Terrestrial
Environment Laboratory (STEL) at Nagoya University in Japan and the
CAWSES program.
