Poll: 18% oppose Mormon candidate
The percentage of Americans who would not vote for a Mormon presidential candidate because of his religion is the same today as it was in 1967 when George Romney ran for the White House, according to a new Gallup Poll on Thursday.
Today, 18 percent of respondents said they would not vote for a Mormon hopeful, compared with 17 percent who responded similarly in 1967. George Romney ran for president in the 1968 election cycle.

However, the current figure of 18 percent is down from 22 percent a year ago.
Gallup has asked this question eight times since 1967, typically when a Mormon was running for president, for example during Sen. Orrin Hatch’s (R-Utah) 2000 presidential campaign. The percentage of respondents who indicated they would not vote for a Mormon has averaged 19 percent.
In the most recent survey, Democrats and those who are least educated are the most likely to discount a presidential candidate based on Mormonism.
The percentage of those who would oppose a Mormon candidate rises from 6 percent among those who have a postgraduate education to 23 percent among those who have a high school diploma or less.
Meanwhile, 24 percent of Democrats would oppose a candidate based on Mormonism, compared with only 10 percent of Republicans.
The Gallup Poll was conducted June 7-10 with a sample of 1,004 adults and a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The funny part of the comments above are that all evidence indicates the more conservative a candidate is, the less likely Intelligence exists.

Read all 18 comments in our forumIt's sad that people are discriminating against a religion that did not allow black bishops until the late 70's and that does indeed teach that dark skin is a curse.
Oh, we all just KNEW that it was only a matter of time before the partisan news media dragged Romney's religion into the campaign, disguised as a "news" story
So when are we going to see the flip side of this story - polls showing the percentage of Americans willing to support a devotee, as Obama is, of the Black Liberation theology which believes that AIDS was a plot by the government to wipe out black people and whose leader preaches " G--D---N America from the pulpit?

10 Facts You Should Know About Mormon History and Belief before Shooting Your Mouth Off
1. Mormons believe in a trinity of three divine persons; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost who are one in purpose.
2. 1832 - A runaway slave named Elija Able is baptized and ordained to the priesthood. He serves multiple missions to Canada where he would be safe from the Fugitive Slave Laws. He was probably the first black Mormon.
3. 1833 – While about half of all Mormons were residing in Missouri, a slave state, Joseph Smith received a revelation that became section 101 of the Doctrine and Covenants. Verse 79 says "Therefore it is not right that one man should be in bondage to another."

He is anti-Gay, against pro choice females, and against persons who have no gods. The Republican machine will operate it's magic and obtain enough money to make and even buy the election for him but that will not make him a decent human being. Also having done my share of studying the Mormon religion, it would be the basis for a good science fiction story - perhaps not in the league of L. Ron Hubbard but close. This man as President would most likely try all he could to take us back to the days of the past. Not the good days - the nasty ones.

Abraham was in fact never mentioned even once in the fragments. Yet it is part of the Mormon scriptures—five chapters. The original papyrus fragments that Smith used was rediscovered in 1966. If Romney ever gets to the White House it would serve to validate Mormonism in America and worldwide.
