The Five Essential Elements

Gallup scientists have explored the demands of a life well-lived for more than 50 years. More recently, Gallup -- in partnership with leading economists, psychologists, sociologists, physicians, and other acclaimed scientists -- began to explore the impact of wellbeing on companies and their financial performance. We mined data from more than 150 countries and areas around the world, studying the common elements that best differentiate lives that are spent thriving from those that are spent struggling or suffering.

From the research, five distinct elements of wellbeing emerged. These elements represent actionable areas that can be leveraged to improve wellbeing:

  • Career Wellbeing: how you occupy your time and liking what you do each day
  • Social Wellbeing: having strong relationships and love in your life
  • Financial Wellbeing: effectively managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security
  • Physical Wellbeing: having good health and enough energy to get things done on a daily basis
  • Community Wellbeing: the sense of engagement and involvement you have with the area where you live

Wellbeing Tools and Resources

Gallup offers our clients an effective system for managing and improving individual and organizational wellbeing. Our online portal, which integrates wellbeing assessment tools with information and support resources, gives individual users the power to understand, track, and improve their wellbeing: the Wellbeing Finder.

To construct this comprehensive measure of individual wellbeing, Gallup designed an assessment composed of the best questions we have asked over the last 50 years. We tested hundreds of questions across countries, languages, and vastly different life situations.

Upon taking the Wellbeing Finder, participants receive access to an account where their detailed results are shared. The site helps an individual identify areas of strength -- and areas where there is opportunity for growth. It also provides tools and resources to manage and improve wellbeing over time.
