All five Romney sons appear on 'Conan'; share that Mitt Romney is a prankster

If you see five similar-looking guys together on a late-night talk show, you can assume it’s a boy band. But last night on Conan, it wasn’t so much “What Makes You Beautiful” as “What Makes You A Romney,” with all five of Mitt Romney’s sons — Tagg, Matt, Josh, Ben and Craig — stopping by the program in an attempt to humanize their dad.

Conan O’Brien joked about the number of them right off the bat, passing around nametags and pointing out that he felt like the “Romney Boys,” as the press calls them, were better suited to a boy band at the mall than the campaign trail. The five took the jokes in stride, and came prepared with stories about their dad from when they were kids. The big takeaway: Mitt Romney loves pranks. READ FULL STORY »

'Futurama' season premiere: A good show gets too comfortable

Tags: , TV
futurama-baby

Futurama began its seventh season with a plotline about a robot copulating with a vending machine voiced by Wanda Sykes, so I realize it might sound silly to argue that the show is starting to feel a little safe. Really, it feels rude to overly criticize Futurama at all. When the show was on Fox a decade ago, it was a famously unloved stepchild/whipping boy for a crew of network executives who appeared to aggressively dislike the show. The first two episodes earned high ratings in the 8:30 timeslot, where it was airing as an uncannily perfect bridge between The Simpsons at 8 and The X-Files at 9. The network promptly shuttled Futurama to Tuesday, where it lost half its viewership while sandwiched between perpetual underperformer King of the Hill and forgotten gem The PJs. READ FULL STORY »

'So You Think You Can Dance' Vegas callbacks: 35 advance, Alexa Anderson gets singled out

There’s nothing like the “Vegas Callbacks” round to make So You Think You Can Dance look like a common pool party!

Thirty-five dancers moved on after a grueling Vegas Callbacks round. Contestants had to make it through four routines: Broadway with perpetual chair sobber Adam Shankman, Jazz with Sonya Tayeh, Ballroom with Jason Gilkinson, and Contemporary with season 2 runner-up and frequent choreographer Travis Wall. We barely saw any names on-screen (so I’m sorry I can’t give you the official list of 35), but the editors did make sure to give us one complete Vegas story arc: that of Blake Lively lookalike Alexa Anderson.

The judges pulled that sneaky move where they single out a contestant to over-criticize about “not connecting”…and then she has a major redemption scene and a killer full-length solo and suddenly she’s the most prominent dancer of the season in everyone’s minds. It’s almost like…they WANT HER TO WIN! Well, that would be fine with me.

Alexa, who was cut right before the Top 20 last season (the judges went with Ryan Ramirez) and has “learned to relax and breathe” since then, fell short in the Broadway performance, prompting Adam Shankman to complain, “I’m sick of saving you. We’re debating putting you through because you are dead.” She died! Oh no wait. “There’s absolutely no light. Dance like you want it, honey. Connect with your partner because you can.” Later, Alexa turned it on and delivered a plethora of what I like to call “jazz faces” — the visual equivalents of “I’m having a blast and being sensual.” Suddenly the judges started writhing around in their seats, growling “Alexa!” “Ahhh!” “Alexa!”

“You’ve got a little star by your name,” Nigel Lythgoe assured the 19-year-old from Arizona. “This child could win,” trilled Debbie Allen (of course) during Alexa’s solo. Pretty big turnaround from the whole group.

Do you think the judges singled her out to pick on with an ulterior motive in mind or was Alexa really lacking in those first two dances?

Favoritism or not, I think she’s wonderful — practically perfect in every way, just like Mary Poppins. I kind of want to BE her. But then who would be me? I bet she’d be really dissatisfied with my mostly sedentary life and the last thing I’d want to do is make Alexa Anderson sad.

Who were your favorites tonight? Can Emilia Lowe a.k.a. short-haired Krysten Ritter eventually connect with a partner? Would Danielle Dominguez have survived the callbacks had she not been struck in the head by a foot? And were you as surprised as I was to see returning hopeful Adrian Lee go?

Stay tuned for EW’s full So You Think You Can Dance recap later on.

A new 'Sesame Street' movie: Whom do you want to see?

We may not be able to tell you how to get to Sesame Street, but we can tell you that the iconic children’s show will be making its way to the big screen again. Sources close to the project confirm that director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and 20th Century Fox are taking on the third feature film outing for Children’s Television Workshop’s landmark program — as The Hollywood Reporter first reported. But it is still very early in the process — too early to say exactly what direction it’s going in or who should be the focus. But we’ve got some ideas for that.

The first movie, Follow that Bird (1985), shined the spotlight on the big yellow bird who’s a friend to everyone. And by the time Elmo in Grouchland (1999) came along, the little red puppet with that earworm of a laugh was the hottest thing going. (The countless hours my young son spent watching that movie was only made tolerable by my enjoyment of Mandy Patinkin’s broad performance as the bad guy who learns a lesson.)

So whose turn do you think it is to take the lead? My vote goes to Bert and Ernie . You want to talk about pop-culture staying power? Just last year, Sesame Street had to issue a release saying that contrary to popular opinion the two roommates were not gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Vote in our poll below!

This Week's Cover: The New Art of Coming Out in Hollywood

EW1213-cover

In this week’s Entertainment Weekly special report cover story, writer Mark Harris examines the new, casual method gay celebrities are using to reveal their sexuality publicly for the first time. Fifteen years ago, when Ellen DeGeneres decided to come out of the closet, it was big news. Not just big: It was the cover of Time magazine, and a major story on OprahPrimetime Live, and CNN. Last month, another star of a popular TV comedy went public with his homosexuality. But the news that The Big Bang Theory’s Emmy-winner Jim Parsons is gay was reported with such matter-of-fact understatement that many people’s first reaction was a quick Google search to see if maybe he was out already and we’d all just failed to notice.

But sometimes big news arrives quietly. That new blink-and-you’ll-miss-it style is an important hallmark of changing times. READ FULL STORY »

Real-life cuteness = onscreen weirdness?

As anyone who saw Mad Men this season knows, good girl Rory Gilmore is all grown up.

SPOILER ALERT! Alexis Bledel’s Mad Men character, Beth, may have had an ill-fated fling with Pete (Vincent Kartheiser), but their onscreen longing has turned into something real. US Weekly reports that the duo have begun dating.

As of press time, Bledel’s rep didn’t respond to EW’s request for comment. Assuming it’s true (there’s some historical precedent, Bledel previously dated her Gilmore Girls costar Milo Ventimiglia) they’ll join a list of celebrity couples that, due to their onscreen antics, make us a little uncomfortable. We can’t help it — poor Trudy!

In that spirit, EW rounded up some of the most memorable celebrity couples with onscreen baggage: READ FULL STORY »

Melanie Lynskey and Ed O'Neill are leaving on a jet plane to New Zealand

When was the last time you actually paid attention to an airline safety video? Been a while? Well, Air New Zealand is hoping to change that, thanks to some help from a couple of celebs.

Backed by some music from The Naked and Famous, your hosts for this new animated in-flight safety video are Ed O’Neill (Modern Family) and New Zealand-born actress Melanie Lynskey (Up in the Air). And Melanie seems a little… disappointed that her seatmate is the Married With Children veteran. “Oh… nice,” she says after he’s introduced himself. Whether she appears shocked/frightened to see him because he’s Ed O’Neill or because his head just appeared out of thin air is debatable.

'X Factor' behind-the-scenes footage: Britney talks judging

X Factor judges love San Francisco. The show posted a new behind-the-scenes clip of Britney Spears, Demi Lovato and L.A. Reid (but no Simon interview!) taking in the San Francisco crowd and discussing their judging strategies.

Spears is obviously no stranger to being young and performing. “Sometimes it’s hard because I know what they’ve been through and being so young and achieving their dreams,” she explained in the clip.

She shared that she doesn’t think she’s the toughest judge–Simon has her beat–and that she’s “looking for spark and spunk, and someone who is meant to do what they’re doing.”

Alec Baldwin's Twitter tantrums: Too far?

alec-baldwin

Image Credit: Andrew H. Walker/Getty Images

Alec Baldwin got into a scrap with a New York Daily News photographer yesterday, and in the last 24 hours, he has been a real class act. His Twitter has been nothing but charm and goodwill for the media. Oh, who are we kidding? This is the man who brought us WordsWithFriendsGate 2011.

The Twitter outburst started almost immediately, with Baldwin tweeting, “A “photographer” almost hit me in the face with his camera this morning. ‪#allpaparazzishouldbewaterboarded.” He spent an  hour attacking Daily News editor Colin Myler and even “the English Queen” herself (our apologies on Baldwin’s behalf, Liz), then posted, “I suppose if the offending paparazzi was wearing a hoodie and I shot him, it would all blow over….” Oof!
