NMED Home Page

Our mission is to control the beneficial uses of ionizing radiation, while providing for protection against intrinsic hazards that it can pose to workers, the public, and the environment.  The Bureau regulates uses of sources of radioactivity and radiation under the statutory authority of the New Mexico Radiation Control Act (74-3-1 through 74-3-16 NMSA, 1978).

This website is intended for the use of the citizens of the State of New Mexico (USA), and the Bureau's licensees and registrants.  We welcome all suggestions that would improve its function.

The Bureau is preparing revisions to its rules.  The revisions include four parts of the Radiation Protection Rules:

20.3.3 NMAC “LICENSING OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL

20.3.4 NMAC “STANDARDS FOR PROTECTION AGAINST RADIATION

20.3.10 NMAC “NOTICES, INSTRUCTIONS AND REPORTS TO WORKERS:  INSPECTIONS”;

20.3.12 NMAC “RADIATION SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR WIRELINE SERVICE OPERATIONS AND SUBSURFACE TRACER STUDIES”

As an Agreement State, New Mexico must maintain a program compatible with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).  A big part of this is tracking the changes in the federal regulations. The proposed revisions to the NMAC are mandated by the revisions in the corresponding federal regulations of the NRC.
