Alburquerque is finally beginning to make steady progress in his recovery from a right elbow injury. The setup man should be ready to return soon after the All-Star break.

Daniel Schlereth (shoulder) has begun long-tossing.

"He's throwing now to 120 feet," Tigers head trainer Kevin Rand said Wednesday. "We're getting close to the point where he'd be ready to resume a mound progression. At that point, we'll reassess him." Schlereth has been on the shelf since late April due to left shoulder tendinitis.

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, Troy Tulowitzki (groin) is out at least six weeks.

Tulo is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on Thursday morning in Philadelphia to remove scar tissue from a nerve in his groin. The Rockies can't be sure how quickly the 27-year-old shortstop will recover. He seems certain to miss all of July.

Joel Carreno gave up five runs and three homers in three innings Wednesday in a loss to the Brewers.

Carreno might be able to help the Blue Jays as a short reliever, but he's not ready to start major league games right now. Corey Hary, Martin Maldonado and Carlos Gomez all homered off him today.

Nick Markakis (hand) might not be ready to swing Friday.

Markakis is still recovering from hamate bone surgery and isn't getting much closer to returning from the disabled list. He was hoping to begin a minor league assignment early next week, but that isn't going to happen.

Edwin Encarnacion went 2-for-4 and hit his 20th homer against the Brewers on Wednesday.

Encarnacion became the fifth American Leaguer to reach 20 homers this season, joining Josh Hamilton, Adam Dunn, Jose Bautista and Curtis Granderson. He's homered in three straight now.

Brewers optioned RHP Tyler Thornburg to Triple-A Nashville.

Thornburg allowed five earned runs over 5 1/3 innings Tuesday in his major league debut against the Blue Jays. He should get another shot at it later this summer.

Braves optioned RHP Todd Redmond to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Redmond spent three days with the Braves but didn't appear in a game. The 27-year-old right-hander will continue to function as organizational relief depth for Atlanta.
