Behind scenes at G20, leaders pressure Merkel to pull away from austerity plan

LOS CABOS, Mexico -- President Barack Obama expressed support for his European counterparts and their measures to manage the fiscal crisis as the G20 Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico wrapped up Tuesday, saying he believes they are "ready to do what is necessary to hold the Eurozone together."

Behind the scenes, however, one senior administration official said the focus of the summit was to convince German Chancellor Angela Merkel to pull away from an austerity plan and focus more on spending and creating jobs.

/

President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese President Hu Jintao chat after arriving for the family photo of the G20 summit, at the convention center in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Another senior administration official was asked whether leaders "ganged up" on Merkel; that official replied, "I don’t think I’d describe it that way." But another official said world leaders were very blunt in their efforts to convince Merkel to sign on to the plan.

While the official declaration out of the G20 Summit pointed to a more integrated financial system and an agreement to help Greece stay in the Eurozone, an official says the group was closer to an agreement to create a fund to loan money to troubled countries.

There is no agreement, however, on how such an account would be funded.

Obama said he was "confident" that over the next several weeks, "Europe will paint a picture of where we need to go," but he acknowledged that the world's economy could affect his election prospects. He used the moment to admonish Congress for not acting on the jobs plan he announced last year.

Obama also used his time in Mexico to meet with President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Hu Jintao of China, where the primary topic of discussion was the unraveling situation in Syria.

While Obama did say he believed both countries understood that civil war was in nobody's interest, it was clear that neither the Russian or Chinese leaders were willing to call for Syrian President Bashar al Assad to step down.

"I wouldn't suggest that at this point, the United States and the rest of the international community are aligned with Russia and China in their positions," the president said carefully.

The president also said he hopes there will be a formal political transition plan in place in Syria in coming weeks, but he was not sure whether Russia or China would sign on. One senior administration official said there was a glimmer of hope that Putin is now willing to consider scenarios where Assad is not in power.

Let's all hope that Europe can begin to recover as quickly as possible. We are all in this together regardless of what people think. Our livelihoods are in a counterbalance with the European nations and we should hope that we all recover and then move to a new, higher level.

Greece can't paid it's debts. They admit it, yet demand more more money to stay.

Germany knows they can't pay, is already out billions, and yet they are supposed to give more.

Really?

Sounds like a great deal. Is already a huge wealth transfer.

And it's not like Italy, and Spain are not right behind.

Oh, and France just reduced retirement age to 60.

Yep, that's salvagable.

No way, no how.

Get ready gang, cause economic reality always wins.

"Ready to do what is necessary" is code language meaning Merkel should now DEMAND that the EuroNations formulate an IMMEDIATE "Political and Fiscal Euro UNION" which means that each country will be politically governed by a small group of "elite" Euro Leaders and ALL the Euro Nations income be controlled by the same group of "elite" people for REDISTRIBUTION to those less fortunate nations which cannot get their act together.

Talk about taking over a country's soverignty without firing a shot.

Currently, Germany is dictating extreme austere measures on Greece, Italy, Spain which costs 250,000 businesses to fail in Greece alone, as banks would not lend any capital.

Alexi Tsipra and Greek Radical Left, you are an inspiration for working people and unemployed everywhere.

Someone had to say enough is enough: the bullying and abuse of workers, pensioners and the unemployed in Greece, in Spain and everywhere must end.

This is crisis caused by rising global inequality, accumulation of wealth in one end and impoverishment and indebtedness of people and states on the other end. The global sovereign and private debt simply masked for years the terrible state of this economy which does not return enough incomes to working people and states to create a healthy demand that can sustain capacity and jobs without the huge debt injections that still persist.

We need a global economy that uses advances in technology to relieve people from work - and not to produce more economic output with less people at work. We need an economy that distributes wealth and taxes the rich to fund states to provide things like education and healthcare to all people irrespective of who their parents are. The Greek people, the workers and the unemployed paid with their jobs and livelihoods to nullify a primary deficit of 25 billion in 2.5 years. They did it and 250,000 small business closed down and unemployment trebled. Now they have had enough and turn to the Left.

We are *not* going to be bullied into voting for more social destruction via austerity in Greece. The current austerity policies are not only anti-social but fiscal consolidation will be reversed if austerity persists because the economy has taken a nasty turn towards a deep depression, If the European leaders do not want to seriously revise the terms of the bailout in the face of the destruction of our country, let them cut the funding, let Greek exit occur, let them destroy Europe and let financial hell break loose.

If the Greek problem cannot be solved, one thing can be certain: no problem that will follow in Europe will ever be solved as well - not least the immediate huge repercussions of Greek exit.

finally someone with compassion. All the hate for the Greek people who are no different than us. Being misled by politicians and the big business/banks does not make the Greek people at fault.

And last time i rememberd, Germany is a member of the E.U. and while they do not have to give Greece any help, they cant complain about the destruction of the E.U. when they default either.

A contract goes both ways, not just for the little guy, but for the big guy too.

Germany tied themselves to Greece through the E.U.

And just as the E.U. will fall, Germany will as well.

An excellent article on Bloomberg discusses the advantages of Germany exiting the Euro vs. Greece. The Euro experiment has told us much about consolidation of economies - and one well worth understanding in the U.S. The U.S. could have broken up early on with the three major contributors, California-New York- Illinois, walking away and leaving the rest of the country behind. Fortunately, we had WWII that bonded us together, and we capitalized all 48 states to win that war.

Now some would have us believe that America is the next Greece. Sure, that is a possibility, but to get there, the German like producers - California, Illinois, and New York - will need to divorce itself from Greece, Italy, Spain (the mid-west, the south, the northwest). Folks, I just can't see that happening.

Or can it .. the A-hole states (Arizona and Alabama) think they can go it alone. I say let them. Let's see how far they get without water. My guess is the residents will beat it out of the state tomorrow. No one to buy their crops .. shucks, let them swim in unpicked cotton and crops. We don't need their paltry contributions. Florida - the state run by the psycho governor, sure, we can do without them. Talk about a way to fix social security. Let that state go and we could fund social security for another century without a single contribution. Walker thinks Wisconsin doesn't need exports or unions. Let them go, cheese can be made anywhere.

My question to Americans is do we act as one, or do we fall into the "Great Divide" introduced by Bush. Are we willing to emulate Europe, or emulate ourselves. Personally, I like Arizona, Alabama, Wisconsin and Florida as much as I like California, Illinois, and New York. But the question is, are you willing to pay the price to have a U.S., or are you willing to degenerate into single states with nothing to offer.

Red,

"My question to Americans is do we act as one, or do we fall into the "Great Divide" introduced by Bush.'

You present a great cautionary tale with the Euro Zone as a backdrop. While Europe deals with its crisis in small increments, supported by US, China, Russia, Britian etc to lend support, we as a country need to look at what we can do in this election year in our own country.

Reading most of the post on this thread, I would say we all need to wake up, stop the empahsizing what divides us but what our one currency, one federal government can do to can do to grow our economy by getting a jobs bill passed and at the same time begin to bend the deficit curve, raise some revenue, reform parts of SS and medicare so it will be there for all of our citizens. Its a tall order, but just blaming each other gets us nowhere.

Last post of the night..... sleep well

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death's construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds
Oh lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait 'til their judgement day comes
Yeah!

Now in darkness world stops turning
Ashes where the bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees the war pig's crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan laughing spreads his wings
Oh lord yeah!

The global economic crisis should be a major wakeup call. Constant expansion of government along with deficit spending and the printing on non-sound fiat currency has failed miserably. Yet, the Keynesian lunatics are calling for more of the same bailouts, fiat printing, porkulus, and expansionalism. Will the idiocy ever end?

Why is it that people/nations who completely mismanage and blow through all their money then turn to those who have managed well and expect them to throw THEIR money into the pot to "save everyone"? Merkel and Germany should be putting pressure on the REST of Europe to quit spending beyond their means, instead of just continuing to throw dry and combustible money on the fire.

It's the liberal way. Spend my money first like a drunken sailor, and then when that runs out, see who else has money and go after it. The problem is not one of "not enough money", the problem is one of "too much government spending".

Considering that the economies of all of the countries that are pushing Merkel to change Germany's policies are in worst shape than Germany's, of course the only reading is that Germany must be wrong.

Oh well, those familiar with economics and understand why capitalism and the free market are the only way to prosperity have foreseen this fiscal calamity coming for years. They saw the mortgage meltdown coming as soon as Clinton and the Democrat controlled Congress beefed up the Community Reinvestment Act to push lenders to make loans to people who the lenders knew wouldn't be able to pay them back. That system was set up to to protect lenders through Freddie and Fannie. It got worse when the Fed started punishing banks that didn't have the right "diversity" figures in their portfolios. So, that encouraged more bad loans. As Bush predicted back in 2002, there was trouble on the horizon and Congress needed to act. But, neither the dems nor the RHINOs had the stomach to.

So, now we have more pushing for the exact policies that are doomed to fail. Admittedly, we've been fortunate to date. The rest of the world is looking to replace the US Dollar as the principal currency of the world trade. To date we've done nothing to stop this from happening. Heck, Obama has even come out in favor of it. If that happens, the economy as we see it today will look like it was booming. If you have to ask what this has to do with anything, then you really need to educate yourself.

Stop saying the Greek people aren't responsible for the fix they are in. They voted for the politicians that voted for the most benefits and least taxes from them - exactly what all the democratic voters do. The Greek voters should have known there is no magic stream of money that was going to fund their retirement at 50.

The French are going to find the same problem. The French have been pushing for a funding approach that lets them push their borrowing needs onto someone else.

I'm sure to Liberals "don't spend more than you make" really is an EXTREME measure. Especially when you've been borrowing and deficit spending at a prodigious pace to live high off the hog. Yes, I agree with you... those extreme measures should not be dictated. Merkel should just politely say no to loaning the PIIGs another Euro... and let them discover the Socialist end game sooner rather than letting them drag Germany into the abyss too. Like Maggie Thatcher predicted, the Greeks have run out of other people's money. Now, watch for the Fed and Obozo to sneak a trillion dollars to the PIIGs with no Congressional oversight....

If only we could get G20 leaders to come to the US and pressure Teapublicans to pull away from austerity plans. Paul Ryan/Romney are worse than "trickle down," worse than "trickle-up" -- It is "flood up" from the middle class and working poor to the richest 1%.

Because it's not enough that wages have been stagnant for decades despite record productivity. Heck no, the rich need more, more, more! The neocons need war, war, war! The rest need their guns and Bibles. Screw JOBS. Legislating women's reproductive rights is clearly the most important priority -- Throw these Teapublican sh!theads out!

As for Europe, it is apparent most posters have no clue. Let me just say this -- The Marshall Plan.

    White Collar - Exactly.

You have to hand it to the President, though. He is clearly bright enough to see he is on the losing side of sentiment, and he is clever enough to reiterate his victim-hood created by Europe, tsunami's, 30 year old fiscal policy, and a Republican Congress simply trying to shelter the country from even more harm. Very pitiful. Very sad.

She will be focusing now on a STIMULUS to CREATE JOBS, much like the U.S. had to do to stay afloat in 2009. We began recovering almost immediately afterwards, even though it was watered down by GOP. They were openly hellbent on obstruction of economic recovery - and still are.

Without the Stimulus, we would be down at 11% or 25%, where countries in Europe are now.

Mr. Obama did such a good job in stimulating the economy and keeping the unemployment rates at or below 8% (tell that to the college grads):

    • Stimulus #1 (Mr. Obama admitted that "shovel ready" jobs were not so "shovel ready" and Mr. Biden stated it was FAILURE.
    • Omnibus
    • HAMP #1, #2. and #3 (has NOT helped the housing market. Foreclosures continue to pile up.)
    • Cash for Clunkers
    • Cash for Appliances
    • Weatherization Program (This was one great program. It created about 14 jobs in Washington State.)
    • Black Farmer Fraud (Billions of dollars to folks not even in the farming business.)
    • Solar Panel Company (Solyndra, Abound, Beacon, First Solar) (Here are your BANKRUPT "Go Green" programs.)
    • Electric Vehicle Companies (Fisker, Finland) (Yep, everyone go out and purchase one of these $ 100,000 vehicles....that is if you can drive it off the lot without having problems.)
    • Ener1 Battery Company
    • Geothermal Plant in Nevada (Mr. Reid's home State.)

Germany is a teeny tiny country that figured out green energy some time ago. Today, it is in a position to SELL clean energy to its neighbors.

It has strong Unions that work closely every step of the way, in partnership with Business.

Germany took the lead in Austerity, because it is so prosperous. However, for the other two dozen countries falling dangerously into the red, it was the wrong approach.

Ms. Merkel is just discovering that. And will have to think of the whole community, not just German success which is isolated, in a plan to change directions and save the E.U. as a whole.

The Germans sealed their fate when they agreed to be part of the E.U.

They, along with the more powerful countries, used their economic advantage to pressure other countries into joining that should not have.

They tied themselves to the sinking ship, if Greece defaults they are screwed, if they stay they are still screwed lol.

Seems to me from the look on Merkels face that she has just realized it herself.

    @Spanky

btw, Backhouse is right, you cannot use Austerity on a country when they have nothing left to cut. Its common sense, you cant take water out of a dried up lake. It was too late for Austerity to work. It really only works in milder recessions too.

Ah, the GermanGem, what's mine is mine, what's yours is mine by default. Thanks, but no thanks GG .. I think we already went through that shower.

But pray tell, how is that austerity movement working in the EU? Got a clue as to why, what, where, when it all happened? Surely you must know about the Nazi austerity movement. That didn't come with a price, thank goodness. And while you are at it, please tell us about the Italian version .. you know, that Marxist movement. I'm sure ya loved that one, or pray tell, is that why your folks moved away?

I am 100% German born and raised in the States and worked for German companies for 20 years from the States. The German culture has been bred on austerity and that has been their philosophy for centuries. My father came to NYC in the States with two footlockers, a wife and two kids and $600 in debt for the trip on the last voyage of a troop ship named the S.S. Washington. My Father worked during the day, my mother worked in an RCA factory during the night. Inside 20 years, they built a beautiful house in the country in North Jersey on 5 acres, owned two Dairy Queen stores and NO MORTGAGES! and all with just an 8th grade education. Hard work, lots of sacrifice, a "save your money" was the codes they lived by. Not very uncommon to this day in Germany. They taught me a lot, I am the first college educated person in the family and now a successful entrepreneur and medium size business owner. My parents taught me well and how to work hard, save THEN spend.

    1. The records on how much time GWB spent playing golf is not funny. And it IS on record.

    2. Vacation records show President Obama at a fraction of predecessors. He was working to fix the worst recession in 60 years, and takes it seriously. Sorry your guys did not and vowed to do nothing and block every attempt to lift up our economy, including 2 milion jobs in the American Jobs Act.

    2. Your party takes the cake on blame game, and $$multi-billions to run and tell Dad.

    3. The GOP candidates did the line-up on TV for months, before President Barack Obama even got started.

    4. Mitt Romney has been campaigning for the last several years, and he will tell you so.

Germany needs something for their help. Germany should be given land in each country they loan money to and gain full use of that land unless the loan is repaid in 10 years. Germany would own most of Europe! The Greeks, the Spanish, the Italians, the French ... would all learn German!

Like the E.U. wants to be controlled by Germany. Like the United Nations telling Americans on what fiscal policy they should adopt. That will go over big here in America. Sig Heil Merkle!

No wonder no one listens to NBC News. They were caught again editing video tapes on what Romney really said. First they edited Zimmerman tapes now Romney tapes. Wish one of them sue NBC for editing the tapes. Where is Holder and Congress on this. Reporting false information should be a crime, especially when it hurts a individual. Maybe defamation of charter, but that is a CIVIL Suit. They should be taken for everything they have.

Per the article: Obama said he was "confident" that over the next several weeks, "Europe will paint a picture of where we need to go,"

Now that worries me a bit because the next "several weeks" should be about 7 or 8 weeks tops, which is two months but with the usual political discount that means 4 months ( election time, but really what is it good for?) and then why should Europe paint a picture of where we need to go? Why don't we go there now, instead of waiting 4 months? More stalling tech.

It tells me no plan of any sort is in place. So the raft of the Medusa is drifting. Happy summer everyone.

The one thing Obama didn't say was how much money is the U.S. going to borrow from China and Japan to give to Europe to help bail them out. Let Europe take care of Europe, we need to take care of our own.

I try to communicate to "austerity" junkies, that only cutting spending, ending bailouts, and reducing stimulus money is akin to slamming your breaks on ice......it won't stop the skid and you will surely end up in a worse accident. Germany...because it has been the biggest beneficiary of the EU and is it's wealthiest and most powerful member...must accept this reality. The strong members of the EU must pay the short term cost of "propping up" the system....or face the possibility of a dissolution of the EU ...and the severe consequences that would have for the world economy.Pay now...or pay a helluva lot more later.

Here we go again. Germany is a success. So, Germany should be punished. How dare a countries economy be better than their neighbors! We should all suffer the same. Thoughts right out of the Communist Manifesto. We have been hearing the very same thing here in the US under Obama. Gotta spend! Gotta Spend. Never mind the US interest alone on the National Debt is approaching $400,000,000.00/year. Liberals have no concept of reality. They obviously think money grows on trees. Never mind it is their children and grand children that will have to pay the debt they created. Well, that is if America is not spent into oblivion 1st!. Want to see the Misery Index go off the charts? Want the end of civilization as we know it? Keep spending other peoples money.

I don't know WHY there seems to be always TALK of giving GREECE another "loan" to get out of it's DEBT. "You can't BORROW your way out of a FINANCIAL hole." The MORE you borrow, the DEEPER the hole gets, and the HARDER it is to "get out".

And yet...this is the PREVAILING line of "thought". Think of a family with ASTRONOMICAL credit card DEBT. And, so, they want ANOTHER credit card to "pay off" the old ones. And so, they get "deeper" yet......into MORE debt.

What a JOKE. Angela Merkel seems right on the money.....with MORE AUSTERITY. And NOT "smoke and mirrors", for Greece. What the Greeks need is REALLY.......more COHESION among themselves, a DEEPER understanding on how their OWN economy really works.

Anyway....I LOOK at the greeks as a "little" irresponsible with MONEY. There are countries in this world......WHO STILL ACT LIKE CHILDREN.

No more bail out money from Germany. German people have no obligation to send their hard-earn money to squander on Greece where austerity meassures are strongly opposed.

What an embarasssing performance by President Obama. His press conference seemed to be the work of a Random Word Generator, rehashing failed programs and ideas, speaking in half truths (full lies since the truth can not be halved, even by this President) and underscoring his lack of knowledge of economics. The F O G indicators were off the charts as he talked in ciricles using multisyllabic descriptors the way a freshman does when the assignment was not read and there is no real comprehension of the complexities of the issue. I wonder, was he out partying for two days with the Secret Service because if this is what he got of the meeeting then his travel card has to be pulled, he can not represent the US any longer.

To Vladimir Putin: "I wouldn't suggest that at this point, the United States and the rest of the international community are aligned with Russia and China in their positions," the president said carefully.

"Carefully" indeed! Obama has essentially admitted he is subordinate to the Russians. In a conversation with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on March 26th, Obama admitted that he was planning to bow to some Russian demand, but that he would have to wait until after the election to do it.

What is it that he doesn't want us to know now? He clearly believes that if we were to find out about it, we would not re-elect him. That's good enough for me! If Obama himself believes that his plan will anger the American people, then we need to prevent him from executing that plan.
