Downloading a trial — Adobe Download Assistant does not respond
-
Like (0)
Trial versions of Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop Elements, and Adobe Premiere Elements are downloaded using the Adobe Download Assistant — a small application that is meant to improve download reliability and avoid issues that commonly occur during large downloads, such as frequent disconnects. After the trial product is downloaded, Adobe Download Assistant should automatically start installing the product.
Under certain conditions, the Adobe Download Assistant installs but does not immediately start downloading the trial product. If this happens:
1. Quit the Adobe Download Assistant.
2. In your browser, return to the product trial download page on Adobe.com. Refresh the page, then click the Download now button again and follow the prompts.
Important: When you start the download, be sure to select your User folder or Desktop folder. A common cause of errors are due to attempts to download the Adobe Download Assistant to the Program Files/Applications folder. The Adobe Download Assistant only downloads the trial application files. Once the download is complete it will launch the application installer; when the installer is launched you can then choose to install the actual trial application into the Program Files/Application folder.

Kim,
I have been pounding my head all day with my new Mac (Lion 10.7) trying to install ADA. Another user on this forum noted he was successfull by turning off "Automatic Graphics Switching" in settings, and it worked. But that was not outlined in any of your How To's.
Below is a C&P of one of my multiple failure logs, perhaps this can shed some insight? Any assistance you could provide would be useful.
Thanks,
Jim W
<moderator removed crash report>
Hatepylons thank you for your response. I have removed the crash report to help make this thread a bit more readable. You are correct in that their seems to be an issue with Automatic Graphic Switching and Adobe AIR. We are currently working closely with Apple to resolve these issues. For now turning Automatic Graphic Switching off will allow you to overcome these difficulties.
Jeff,
On the flip side, can the Automatic Switching be turned back on once done with ADA? I am fresh to Mac's and I wouldn't know how to "fix" the computer if turning it back on corrupts a log file or something similar.
And the crash report was for your benefit(s), so no worries on deleting it. I have multiple - if you'd like to see them, let me know.
Thanks,
Jim W
Thanks Jim and we have had reports from some users that they were unable to use Adobe AIR applications at all with Automatic Graphic Switching turned on. So it will depend on how often you use Applications which utilize Adobe AIR.
The Download Assistant "froze" when I tried to download the Flash Pro CS5.5 for Windows trial into a specific folder on my computer. I discovered a solution -- don't choose a specific download folder. The download is successful if I just download to the desktop.
Excellent Ted Fitzpatrick you might also want to check the permissions set on the folder you were trying to save too.
Doh! I think you're right, Jeff ... I was trying to download into my "Program Files" folder, where I would have needed to have admin rights.
@Jeff Thanks so much for this
@ Entire Adobe Team:
I love Adobe and all of your products but this is absolutely ludicrous. A download assistant is crashing because of a graphics issue? I'm baffled why we cant just download the software the normal way. My browser does a fine job all by itself.
At bare minimum you should have a disclaimer on your website explaining this issue. There are TONS of people on Macs with the default graphic switching enabled, and not a single one is likely to go as far as I went (searching the support forums?!) to find the solution.
I understand updating the software takes time, but again, the first response should be at least updating some simple copy.
Thanks for letting me vent I still love y'all
I have been trying to download the Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 trial all afternoon. I have restarted the download manager many times. I get the same error each time. It asks me to login, then asks me to select a location and then just sits there and does nothing. Here's a screenshot:
I am totally stuck! Any ideas? I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.8.
Is this problem related to the graphics switching? or another problem entirely?
Thanks
Hello,
Thank you Jim W for helping me not lose more hours (already lost one) in trying to figure out the reason why ADA would not start (nor can I find it anywhere after I am told it has been installed)
I am new to Mac, just got my first one a couple of days ago and while it is gorgeous in many ways, I am still trying to find my way around.... which unfortunately means I cannot seem to located where I can switch the Automatic Graphics Switching off... could someone kindly point a detailed way (I am on OS Lion)
Many thanks,
Barbara
p.s. and I have to agree fully, it is extremely surprising that Adobe should have this kind of issue with a MAC (and lack of proper instructions).... I used to think it was a marriage made in heaven ;-)
Barb6819 if your Macintosh has the Automatic Graphic Switching feature it will be located in the Energy Saver preference pane in System Preferences.
Thank you! I found it a couple of minutes later on another forum through Google search (long live Google! It was exactly where you say.
Cheers
I seem to be experiencing the same problem as IslandGirlER
I have been trying to download the CS5 Master Collection. I have restarted as suggested countless times. After selecting a location, nothing happens. I tried movinb location but the same thing happens - or not happens.
Any advice welcome.
Thanks
Ange_11 did you try the steps listed by Kim above? They should resolve your difficulties. Beyond that do you receive any type of error message? Which operating system are you using?
Thanks for responding. Turns out it was my Internet that was causing all the problems. Hopefully fixed within a few days so I can finish downloading.
Sorry to waste your time...

I have been trying to download tria version of CS5.5 Premium all day. The download freezes at the same point every time. I have uninstalled/reinstalled download manager twice now. I am on Max OSX 10.7.3. I was saving to my desktop. No error message - just freezes with about 1cm of the progress bar showing each time.
Thanks
LongFelllow-uk1 do you receive any type of error messages at all? If not do you have a software firewall installed which might be preventing the download from occuring?
That was quick!
I have no error message and the firewall is disabled on my Mac.
Any further advice?
Thanks
The only other relevant piece would be to remove the Adobe Download Assistant and then refresh the trial page prior to inititating the download. You might also try initiating the download of the trial in a different browser to make sure there is not an add-on or a cache file which might cause your difficulties.
Thanks - I have tried both Firefox and Safari on 2 different Macs. Exactly same problem. As this is on both Macs and the same network, are downloads sensitive to port settings on internet routers?
Thanks
If you are able to surf the internet you should be able to download succesfully. The main issue can be software firewalls which will block particular applications from accessing the internet. Do you have any security software installed which might be causing this?
Looks like the problem is something to do with my router. I tried to download to my laptop from a public hotspot and it would have run to completion if I had the time (slow speed).
Any thoughts?
Have you customized the settings much on your router? You could always try a factory reset and test the download before restoring all of your security settings. Depending on where you are located though you will probably at least want to enable password encryption.
Hello,
Download Assistant does not automatically begin my download (a trial of Adobe Flash). I closed it, returned to the download page, refreshed the page, and downloaded again. Download Assistant opens, I sign in, I browse to a folder to save the program. No download begins and nothing happens. What else can I try?
Thanks.
In case anyone else has that problem...looks like I had to install flash somewhere other than C/program files x86, which boggled me because I have installed many other programs there. If a different location doesn't work, ask support for the direct download link that does not use Adobe Download Assistant at all.
The way Adobe is upgrading things, is so frustrating. Creating all these different obstacles just to download a program, is ridiculous. The simple direct link worked fine. I'm attempting to download Adobe Photoshop Cs5. When I get to the assistant window, it's requesting that I sign in. When I do, nothing happens. The program just sits there, nothing starts downloading. Just a screen with download other programs to download on bottom. Can someone help me please?
Me too. Trying to download the Photoshop free trial onto my Air / Lion 7, it chewed up $25 of my mobile broadband and then crashed and the disk image is stuffed. That's WAY to expensive to keep on repeating over and over.....
However, where is this Automatic Graphic Switching feature? I see no Settings in my System Preferences....
I'm having the same problem as the other people, but the Graphics switcher is not in my Energy Saver on Macbook Air running Lion. Can you tell me where it would be? I have blown over $35 of my mobile broadband allocation and many hours of my time on 3 attempts to get the darned Photoshop trial to download and the Assitant keeps bombing out. Getting really fed up with it!
I'd attach a screen shot but as soon as I try to, the forum kicks me off and I have to start again! Not once but several times. I used to find Adobe stuff very easy and user friendly once upon a time...
P.S. My laptop is new, all other downloads of other companies' software work flawlessly, I have no firewalls installed, etc, etc. I don't understand why it has to be such a production getting the PS trial....
Well it's 6 hours later and the Download Assistant is still trying to extract, while gobbling up my broadband allocation. If Adobe can't help me simply get the free trial without going through hoops messing with my computer settings (as if it's my computer's fault!) and starting over and over, that will be the end of my story with CS5 and I won't be buying the program.
See if you can browse your files to the location where you selected to save the trial, and if you would find there the downloaded dmg. If yes, you should be able to just click on it, and it would open in Finder. Perhaps it's already mounted in Finder ?
Well I managed to download completely at a different location (twice) and each time I received the message 'illegal seek' when Dowload Manager extracted the software. I have wasted hours on this now. The software would not download on my broadband system with even the most minimal security settings on my router.
Any practical advice appreciated.
Thanks
Hi longfellow1-uk & diannetrussell,
I have sent each of you a private message with further instructions.
Request you to please review the same and let me know if the issue persists.
Thanks
Thanks - I could not follow the link and download the file that you sent as I do not have permission on your server.
Thanks, but the dmg does not open.
The extraction fails with error 202. It says try downloading again but I'm already on my third attempt and lost too much time and money.
I'm over Adobe Download Assistant and don't want any more to do with it; I haven't got time to waste my life and money on things with so many bugs.
I'm going to do a direct download from a different link.
You claim you sent "each of us" a private message, but I didn't receive anything, and the problem is yet to be resolved. Adobe needs to return back to the ORIGINAL download method. This is insane.
I have a problem. I can not install adobe download assistant:
i would like to download InDesign trial version.
I went to the download page, clicked on "download now"
it downloads "AdobeDownloadAssistant-1.dmg" in my downloads
i double cliked on it
a Install adobe download assistant page opened with an a icone adobe download assistant
i double cliked on this icon
i am asked if i want to open it because it's coming from the internet
i cliked on open
and ...
nothing happened !!!
I have a mac os x 10.7.2 (i7)
Ps it's my first mac
I've been trying to download the trail version of Photoshop Elements 10 all day now. It downloads then says extracting. It's been "extracting" for the pass 3 hours and this is my second attempt, that's unacceptable. I need this program for my class and if I can''t get it then how am I to complete my coursework?? I need a fix asap. When I go to the location the dmg file says disk image could not be opened and the reason is invalid checksum. My assignment is due in a week I must have this program!!
So an update on the .dmg checksum error. If you go into the location of the dmg file and try to open it up a window will open and before it finishes the loading process click skip. I just did that and now after seven hours trying to figure this out Photoshop Elements 10 is installed on my Mac. Glad I figured this out because I would've been s.o.l. for my class. Hope this works for everyone
I've had this problem too, on Windows 7. The download manager just sits there, and does nothing, even after I navigate back to the trial page. It turns out that you can't install Flash in the Programs folder! It just freezes. Really Adobe. Why make it this complicated? You have to pick a different folder for ADA to actually work.
This thing is a piece of crap. everytime i try to get a DL (dont matter which one I have tried a few) it starts up and immediatly crashes my system (Windows 7 x64, 8GB Ram, Intel 2.83GHz Quad Core Processor) nothing wrong with my system at all ran all the tests. even formated the HDD reinstalled everything and same effect with the Adobe DL manager instant system crash. adobe is better off sticking to the programs they know best
I'm having issues using the Download Assistant. The accept and quit buttons don't work. I'm running Windows 7 and trying to download the Premiere Elements trial.
Hi.
I'm trying to download the InDesign Trial since 2 p.m, and the Download Assistant doesn't respond. This is the message that appears "Sign in with you Adobe ID to continue", but I already did that. I tried 10 times... Here's a screenshot of the last one.
I'm waiting like 30 minutes to download starts, and nothing happens.
Please, someone help me, because I have a work to do, and I need this trial.
My trial download is still not working even after doing all the things it says!!! Adobe has a **** OF A LOT of PISSED OFF customers here! FIX YOUR problems adobe because it is not on our end!
Hi Samantha_BR,
Can you share more details with us to help troubleshoot. Did you try:
1. Quitting the Adobe Download Assistant.
2. In your browser, return to the product trial download page on Adobe.com. Refresh the page, then click the Download now button again and follow the prompts.
Have you tried another browser? Also, can you let us know what OS you're on?

Mauroa1,
Can you please try:
1. Quitting the Adobe Download Assistant.
2. In your browser, return to the product trial download page on Adobe.com. Refresh the page, then click the Download now button again and follow the prompts.
3. Also, please try running the application as an administrator, and/or saving the Adobe Download Assistant to a different location within your Users folder (this will avoid problems with insufficient permissions to install into the Program Files folder).
Hi N4me,
Sorry this caused issues for you. You are correct, the Adobe Download Assistant does not have sufficient permission to save files to the Program Files folder. If you run the Adobe Download Assistant as an administrator, or save to a different location (for example, in your Users folder), this should resolve the issue.
