Storm brings it all

A large storm system over the middle of the country brings just about every kind of weather imaginable today.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to redevelop over eastern Kansas and northern Missouri this afternoon producing large hail, damaging wind gusts and tornadoes. Those storms should roll east-northeastward into western Illinois and southern Iowa this evening, although the tornado threat should lessen as the storms move into cooler temperatures.

Once the storms form in Kansas they should build southwestward into central Oklahoma by late afternoon. Those storms also pose the risk of developing tornadoes, large hail and damaging wind gusts. Some of the same areas were hit hard in Monday?s severe event.

The severe thunderstorms should continue building southwestward into north-central and central Texas during the late afternoon or early evening hours. The tornado threat appears to be less in Texas, but large hail and very strong winds are still possible.

A warm front extending east of the storm produces its own area of severe thunderstorms in the Ohio Valley this afternoon and evening. The main threats from those storms are hail and strong winds.

There is a cold and wintry side to this storm as well. Accumulating snow is forecast over Wyoming, Colorado and in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Additional snowfall of 4 to 8 inches in the mountains and up to 4 inches in the lower elevations is forecast today. Storm totals should be 10 to 20 inches in the mountains and up to 10 inches in the lower elevations.
